Position Summary:

The Medical Communications Manager is responsible for developing, coordinating, and executing strategic communication initiatives that strengthen alignment between McGovern Medical School (MMS) and its faculty clinical practice, UT Physicians. A significant portion of this role involves providing direct support to the Dean of McGovern Medical School and fostering a close partnership with the Medical School's Office of Communications to ensure cohesive, timely, and accurate messaging across academic, clinical, and administrative audiences.

As a liaison, the Medical Communications Manager translates complex clinical and academic information into accessible communication that supports leadership visibility, faculty engagement, and clear information flow. Working within the Marketing and Communications team, the role ensures message consistency, strategic alignment, and compelling storytelling that highlight MMS and UT Physicians' excellence in education, research, and patient care.

Position Key Accountabilities:

  • Serves as primary communications partner to the Dean.
  • Develops and implements communication strategies supporting MMS, UT Physicians, and institutional goals.
  • Ensures consistent communication of Dean's priorities across MMS and clinical operations.
  • Advises leaders on messaging, tone, and communication planning.
  • Manages sensitive information and supports proactive messaging on clinical and organizational updates.
  • Prepares speeches, leadership messages, talking points, and announcements.
  • Writes and edits communications related to clinical operations, academic programs, faculty initiatives, and institutional updates.
  • Translates complex clinical or scientific topics into accessible language for a variety of audiences.
  • Develops digital content, newsletters, web updates, and institutional emails.
  • Identifies and elevates stories highlighting innovation, research, and community impact.
  • Coordinates messaging with the MMS Office of Communications and institutional partners (Media Relations, Internal Communications, Creative Services, Digital Strategy).
  • Supports UT Physicians and clinical leadership with practice updates, operational messaging, and aligned communications.
  • Plans and executes communication components for academic, clinical, and institutional events.
  • Develops remarks, scripts, briefing materials, and communication plans for major initiatives.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Certification/Skills:

  • Demonstrated ability to develop executive-level communications, including speeches, talking points, leadership messages, and high-visibility materials for senior leaders
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills with the ability to translate complex clinical, scientific, and academic information into clear, accessible content for diverse audiences
  • Strong judgment, discretion, and the ability to manage sensitive, confidential, and time-critical information with professionalism
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively with clinical leadership, faculty, and cross-functional teams to ensure accuracy, alignment, and message consistency
  • Demonstrated ability in supporting communication needs for deans, physicians, clinical executives, or other high-level administrators in academic or healthcare settings
  • Working knowledge of academic medical centers, faculty practice operations, and clinical workflows, with the ability to navigate and integrate information across clinical and academic environments

Minimum Education:

Bachelor's Degree in communications, journalism, public relations, marketing, healthcare administration, or a related field required

Minimum Experience:

5 years of experience in healthcare, clinical, or strategic communications required Experience within academic medicine or large healthcare systems preferred

Physical Requirements:

Exerts up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds frequently and/or a negligible amount constantly to move objects.
