SUMMARY:

The Special Educator instructs students with identified significant special needs to develop the essential elements in ELA and Math skills, as well as functional living skills. The Special Educator assumes a professional role by establishing rapport with parents, support staff and administration.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides individualized and small group instruction to assist students in obtaining functional life skills to transition into the world of work and into adulthood.
  • Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior to achieve effective learning and assist with integration into the work and social environments.
  • Develops lesson plans and instructional materials that are developmentally appropriate learning experiences.
  • Serves as a member of diagnostic and IEP teams to assist in planning appropriate programs for students.
  • Consults and collaborates with other school personnel in sharing information that will assist in planning of programs and services.
  • Complete individual educational assessments and prepare written reports interpreting results and recommending educational modifications as needed.
  • Evaluates students' academic, social and work skills growth.  Keeps appropriate records and prepares progress reports.
  • Identifies students' needs, makes appropriate referrals and develops strategies for individual education plans.
  • Plans and coordinates the work of job coaches in the classroom and on the job site.
  • Participate in job development for student work sites.
  • Maintains contact with parents and/or students via phone or written communications and documents appropriately.
  • Maintains the physical environment of the classroom for organization and presentation.
  • Participates in curriculum planning.
  • Participates in planning individualized education programs designed to meet student needs consistent with state and federal regulations.
  • Assumes responsibility for the development and implementation of specific objectives to meet the needs of each individual student.
  • Refers students for observation to members of the support staff, which includes speech pathologists, physical therapists, occupational therapists social workers, etc.
  • Attends IEP meetings, staff meetings, and in-service workshops.
  • Other duties as assigned by the building administrator or Director of Special Education.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervisors job coaches within the program and assist the building administrator with evaluations.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution in the area of special education.
  • Rhode Island Department of Education certification as a special educator, severe and profound.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with diagnostic teams, students, parents, teachers, school administrators, and community agencies.

  • While performing the duties of this job, may be regularly required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch; and talk and hear.

  • Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision required by this job includes close vision, distance vision and depth perception.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

While performing the duties or this job the Special Educator must be able to meet multiple demands from several people. He/she may be expected to use his/her car to travel to schools/meetings. Reimbursement for mileage will be made. The Special Educator will be based at the assigned school(s).
