Department Summary

The primary objective of TIDE is to create sustainable workforce development for the Southern Dallas Region. This will be achieved through classroom-to-career opportunities for students while expanding educational opportunities for community members and supporting consulting and research opportunities for faculty.

Position Overview

The Director of the Technology, Innovation, Development, and Entrepreneurship (TIDE) Center at the University of North Texas at Dallas (UNT Dallas) is an 11-month position which will serve as the strategic and operational leader for the TIDE Center, one of the university's key initiatives.

The director will assist TIDE's role as a convener of parties interested in advancing the Southern Dallas Region through technology, innovation, development, and entrepreneurship. These gatherings aim to identify opportunities and needs across these thematic areas that contribute to regional growth. TIDE will support workforce development, education, training, and applied research to meet the emerging business needs in our region. This will be accomplished through community involvement, education, and urban planning solutions. TIDE will achieve these goals through classroom-to-careers projects, consulting and research activities, and the development of curricular and extracurricular programs to foster the growth of the Southern Dallas area and the experiential learning of UNT Dallas students.

The Director will advance the TIDE Center's mission to foster innovation ecosystems, support an entrepreneurial culture, enhance the focus on future technologies, and build support for development happening around southern Dallas. This position requires a visionary leader capable of bridging theory and practice within higher education, industry, and community interests.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Management Information Systems, Entrepreneurship, Engineering, Computer Science, Business Administration or a related field.
  • Demonstrated success in managing strategic initiatives, partnerships, and funding opportunities.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and team leadership skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, students, industry leaders, and community partners.
  • Prior work experience (industry or education) in one or more areas related to TIDE.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated success in managing strategic initiatives, partnerships, and funding opportunities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive leadership experience in innovation, research administration, or technology development.
  • Proven record of securing external funding or grants.
  • Experience leading a center related to the disciplines of TIDE within a university or public institution.
  • Familiarity with the North Texas entrepreneurial and development ecosystem, including partnerships with local chambers, accelerators, and related business and economic development organizations.
  • Knowledge of building entrepreneurial and innovative cultures, future technologies, development processes, and applied research processes.
  • Prior work experience (industry or education) in multiple areas related to TIDE.

Job Duties

  • Develop and implement the TIDE Center's strategic vision aligned with UNT Dallas's mission of empowering students through innovation, access, and economic mobility.
  • Lead the planning, creation, and execution of programs that promote technology, innovation, development, and entrepreneurship.
  • Build and sustain collaborations with local industries, startups, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations to strengthen the innovation ecosystem.
  • Advance UNT Dallas's regional leadership in technology (including future technologies like cybersecurity and AI, data analytics, and supply chain and logistics), innovation (including advancing the spirit of innovation across all disciplines of business), Development (including economic development and urban planning), and Entrepreneurship (including traditional entrepreneurial thinking and hospitality).
  • Ability to make data-informed decision-making, including assessment, program evaluation, and reporting for continuous improvement.
  • Demonstrated expertise in experiential learning models, career development theory, and high-impact practices such as internships, study abroad, service learning, and undergraduate research.
  • Strong strategic planning, organizational leadership, and changing management skills within complex, student-centered environments that include first-generation and non-traditional college students.
  • Oversee the day-to-day operations, budgeting, staffing, and strategic resource management of the TIDE Center.
  • Develop and manage grant proposals, sponsorships, and external funding opportunities.
  • Serve as the primary liaison between UNT Dallas and regional networks that support all areas of TIDE.
  • Build partnerships that offer students experiential learning, internships, and mentorship opportunities in areas related to TIDE.
  • Support interdisciplinary research and curriculum development related to the disciplines of TIDE.
  • Facilitate faculty and student participation in applied research, innovation projects, and startup ventures.
  • Facilitate and manage the planned space for TIDE and a proposed cybersecurity laboratory.
  • Teach 6-12 hours (2-4 courses) annually in disciplines related to TIDE.
