Job Title: JV Girls Basketball Assistant Coach

Classification: Temporary, Non-exempt, Seasonal

Reports To: Athletic Director, Assistant Athletic Director

Dates: Nov 3 to Mid February

Job Purpose

The JV Girls Basketball Assistant Coach is responsible for supporting the Head Coach in all aspects of the program. This includes fostering a positive, healthy, and collaborative team culture, facilitating the skill development and competitive training of the student-athletes, and ensuring a safe, inclusive, and educationally sound environment within the framework of school and league policies.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Coaching & Instruction:

  • Assist the Head Coach with the planning, execution, and supervision of daily practices, skill development drills, and game-day preparation.

  • Lead specific instructional sessions or drills as directed by the Head Coach.
  • Provide positive, constructive, and individualized feedback to players to enhance performance and understanding of the game.
  • Adjust practice plans and procedures as necessary to strictly comply with all health and safety guidelines, including any current COVID-19 restrictions.

  • Team Management & Administration:

  • Be consistently present and actively engaged at all scheduled practices, games, team meetings, and related program events.

  • Coordinate and implement activities designed to build strong team camaraderie, sportsmanship, and positive team dynamics.
  • Assist with the inventory, management, issuance, and collection of all equipment and uniforms at the beginning and end of the season.
  • Maintain necessary and timely communication with the Head Coach, Athletic Director, and team members/parents as directed.
  • Participate actively in all required coaching and departmental meetings.

  • Compliance & Safety:

  • Adhere to all policies set forth by the school, league, and the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF).

  • Successfully complete all mandated coaching education and certification requirements (e.g., CPR/First Aid, Sudden Cardiac Arrest, Concussion Protocol, etc.) per CIF and school guidelines.
  • Ride the team bus for away practices and/or games when necessary, providing supervision and mentorship during transit.

Qualifications

  • Education: Undergraduate Degree strongly preferred.
  • Experience: Previous high school or collegiate-level playing or coaching experience in basketball required.
  • Knowledge: Comprehensive knowledge of basketball fundamentals, strategy, and rules.

  • Skills & Characteristics:

  • Proven ability to foster and improve positive team dynamics and individual player development.

  • Highly organized, reliable, and punctual.
  • Possesses a positive, patient, and enthusiastic demeanor.
  • Demonstrated enjoyment and effectiveness in working with high school student-athletes.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

  • Working Conditions: Work is performed both indoors (gymnasium) and potentially outdoors, involving exposure to moderate noise levels and various weather conditions during travel.

  • Physical Requirements (Essential Physical Tasks):

  • Ability to stand, walk, and be active on one's feet for extended periods (multiple hours) during practices and games.

  • Capability to demonstrate skills and drills, which may require running, jumping, bending, and lifting light-to-moderate objects (e.g., equipment, water coolers).
