Job Title: Fencing Varsity Assistant Coach

Classification: Temporary, Non-exempt, Seasonal

Reports To: Athletic Director, Assistant Athletic Director

Job Purpose

The Fencing Varsity Assistant Coach supports the Head Coach in all aspects of the program. The primary purpose is to foster a positive and high-performing team culture, facilitate sport-specific skill development during the season, and ensure the efficient and safe daily operation of the varsity fencing program.

Duties and Responsibilities
Coaching & Instruction
  • Plan, lead, and supervise daily practices and workouts, focusing on sport-specific techniques, footwork, tactics, and conditioning relevant to all three weapons (foil, épée, and saber).
  • Provide individualized and group instruction to athletes to promote skill progression and competitive readiness.
  • Support the Head Coach's vision and program philosophy, ensuring consistent application of coaching strategies and team expectations.
  • Attend and actively participate in all team gatherings, practices, and competitions (matches/tournaments).
Team Management & Administration
  • Coordinate and execute team-building activities to develop camaraderie, sportsmanship, and a positive team dynamic.
  • Assist with administrative and organizational tasks, including team communications (to athletes and parents as directed), scheduling, and travel logistics.
  • Manage, maintain, and inventory team equipment (e.g., weapons, body cords, scoring machines, protective gear) to ensure proper functioning and safety.
  • Assist the Head Coach with the distribution and collection of uniforms at the beginning and end of the season.
  • Communicate effectively and proactively with the Head Coach, Athletic Director, and athletes as necessary.
Compliance & Safety
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of all student-athletes during practices, travel, and competitions.
  • Adhere to and enforce all rules, regulations, and ethical guidelines set forth by the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) and the school.
  • Complete all required coaching education and certifications mandated by the CIF and the school district on an annual basis.
  • Ride the team bus for practices and/or games/tournaments when required by school policy.
Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Experience: Previous playing or coaching experience at the high school or collegiate level, or equivalent experience in competitive club fencing.
  • Knowledge: Strong knowledge of the sport of fencing, including rules, techniques, and strategies for at least one, and preferably all three, weapons.
  • Attributes: Highly organized, reliable, patient, and positive. Demonstrated ability to effectively work with and mentor teenagers and positively influence team dynamics.
  • Certification: Must pass a background check and complete all required safety, first aid, and CIF coaching certifications prior to the start of the season.
Working Conditions

Primarily located in a fencing gym and various indoor/outdoor athletic facilities. Requires evening and weekend hours for practices, home matches, and travel to away competitions/tournaments.

Physical Requirements
  • Essential Physical Tasks: Ability to be on one's feet for multiple hours while actively supervising and instructing athletes. Must be able to demonstrate fencing movements and assist with the movement and setup of equipment (e.g., scoring boxes, strips). Ability to wear a mask for extended periods during instruction is required.
