Established in 1943, the Fredericksburg SPCA cares for over 2,000 animals each year.

We are a community resource center working to enhance the human-animal bond while improving the lives of animals in need. We provide support services for animals, the humans who love them, and the agencies that protect them.

JOB SUMMARY

: 

The Director of Shelter Operations reports to the Executive Director and is responsible for the direct oversight and active management of daily shelter operations, including animal care, adoptions, foster, behavior, and facilities. This is a hands-on leadership role requiring regular visibility on the shelter floor and close collaboration with all levels of staff to ensure the consistent delivery of high-quality, compassionate care and services.

The Director of Shelter Operations directly supervises the Animal Care Manager, Compassionate Care Specialists, Adoption Specialists, and their respective teams — including adoptions, behavior, foster, and compassionate care technicians — ensuring that staff are trained, supported, and held accountable to organizational standards. This role is responsible for developing and enforcing operational protocols, monitoring day-to-day workflow, and supporting a culture of growth, excellence, and teamwork. The Director of Shelter Operations also ensures regulatory compliance, staff development, and operational alignment with the mission and goals of the Fredericksburg SPCA.
