To enforce the law, provide service, information and aid to all citizens as circumstances require, prevent crime, suppress disturbances, investigate criminal offenses, and arrest offenders. Responsible for enforcement duties for the protection, safety and welfare of students, employees, visitors, and all property within the area under the control and jurisdiction of the Texas A&M University-San Antonio, including primary jurisdiction in all counties where the Texas A&M System has real property interest and secondary jurisdiction in all other Texas counties. Exercises independent judgment within the limits prescribed by law, institutional rules and regulations and departmental policies and procedures.
Salary Range: $58,328–$64,728 annually
Responsibilities:
Serve as a Campus Security Authority in compliance with the Federal Clery Act.
Makes frequent vehicle, bicycle or foot patrols of the campus to provide a police presence, ensures that a sense of security is felt by the general campus community and effect active enforcement of Texas Motor Vehicle and Penal Code Laws in addition to the regulations of Texas A&M University-San Antonio and the Texas Education Code.
Such patrols will take on a pro-active enforcement role in that, particularly during the night hours, campus buildings will be individually checked for security violations, (e.g., unlocked doors and/or the presence of unauthorized personnel or intruders, etc.)
Investigates all complaints of alleged offenses or other violations of conduct, effecting comprehensive interviews of complainants and/or witnesses.
In appropriate cases the officer secures crime scenes as necessary, collects physical evidence and ensures that such evidence is appropriately marked and preserved for presentation at court proceedings or other avenues of case disposition.
The officer must question all witnesses.
Give testimony in the criminal courts of this state and the United States.
Confers with prosecuting attorneys, and maintains confidential information.
Preserve the peace by the use of all lawful means, interceding, when authorized by law, to prevent or suppress crime.
Execute all lawful process.
Arrest offenders with and without warrant when authorized by law.
Investigate criminal offenses to detect and arrest criminals, and recover stolen or lost property.
Enforce traffic law by detecting violations, making violator contacts, placing violators in custody or issuing citations or warnings.
Investigate motor vehicle collisions.
Prepare various written reports narrating law enforcement and police activities.
Responds to any and all calls regardless of whether such calls are for an emergency situation, injuries, etc. or of a criminal nature.
In the case of an incident involving a physical injury, the officer will obtain the services of emergency medical technicians and will remain at the scene to ensure the welfare of the injured party and to render any and all assistance to the responding medical personnel including traffic and crowd control.
Provides escorts services as needed to campus community personnel particularly during night hours to ensure personal physical safety.
Unlocks vehicles upon appropriate request if such services can be accomplished with available tools and without incurring any financial liability upon the university.
Provides authorized access to campus facilities to those persons who are authorized to enter, particularly during nighttime hours.
Serves as a liaison with the general campus population for the purpose of establishing a high degree of rapport with all levels and maintaining clear and effective avenues of communication.
Directs motor vehicle traffic during periods of congestion and provides similar services upon request to local authorities' area contiguous to the campus.
Performs other duties as assigned such as responding to other situations to include but not limited to instances where their presence may be needed to prevent and/or curtail disturbances in offices, classrooms or other facilities.
Required Education and Experience:
High school diploma or higher in related field.
One (1) year of related experience.
Preferred Education and Experience:
Associate's degree.
Three (3) years of higher education or other campus law enforcement experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Must successfully complete the Texas A&M University-San Antonio Police Officer Field Training program.
Must be proficient with all equipment utilized in the performance of assigned duties, to include but not limited to firearms, restraints, less lethal force weapons and techniques, automobiles, communication equipment, personal computers, radar and mobile video recording equipment.
Must demonstrate logical, effective problem solving ability.
Must be able to provide credible testimony in a court of law.
Applicants are exposed to outside weather conditions.
May be required to work either day or night on anyone of three shifts with varying days off and on holidays.
Work involves a degree of hazard.
Must have the physical and mental capabilities to properly carry out responsibilities and duties as a commissioned police officer of Texas A&M University-San Antonio such as running, jumping over, carrying, reaching above head, lowering, hand-wrist and elbow motion and holding.
Must understand state and federal laws and university policies and procedures.
Thoroughly cognizant of the proper use of force and deadly force.
Prepared to maintain all hours required to maintain certification and to acquire other certifications, (i.e., basic, intermediate and advanced certification).
Understanding of Clery reportable crimes, timely warnings and emergency notification as required.
Registrations, Certifications, and Licenses:
Must meet minimum licensing standard requirements as required by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) § 217.1 and Texas A&M System Regulation : System University Police Department Collaboration.
A Basic Proficiency certificate from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) Rule §
An Intermediate, Advance or Master Proficiency certificate from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) Rule § 221.1.
Must have a valid driver's license not subject to suspension.
Other Requirements or Other Factors:
Must possess an active, valid Peace Officer License issued by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement with less than a two (2) year break in service as a Commissioned Police Officer in the State of Texas.
Must comply with Texas A&M System Policies and Texas Commission on Law Enforcement standards concerning age requirements and physical, mental and educational standards.
Must be able to successfully take and pass a medical and psychological test and exam.
Be fingerprinted and subject to a search of local, state and U.S. national records and fingerprint files to disclose any criminal record.
Never been convicted of any family violence offenses, is not prohibited by state or federal law from operating a motor vehicle, not prohibited by state or federal law from possessing firearms or ammunition; has not had a dishonorable or bad conduct discharge from the military; is a U.S. Citizen.
