Job Summary
Perform manual and clerical work in the receipt, storage, and release of found, stolen, and confiscated property and evidence impounded by the Sheriff's Department.

Application

  • Applicant will not receive nor are entitled to a copy of the contents of their test results.
  • No documents, copies of reports submitted by the applicant will be returned.
  • No documents, reports or information utilized for, or obtained, during the selection process will be furnished to the applicant.
  • Applicant will not be advised of the reason(s) for non-selection.

Drug Use

  • Marijuana – Agency discretion.
  • Dangerous Drugs/Narcotics/ Hallucinogens/Vaporous Substances – Any time within the past five (5) years. This includes methamphetamine, amphetamine, barbiturates, speed, spice, bath salts, crack, cocaine, heroin, opioids, mushrooms, ecstasy, LSD, ketamine, salvia, PCP, anabolic steroids, etc.
  • Peyote/ Mescaline - Illegal use as described above. (Exception- Bona fide religious ceremonies)
  • Sale, Production, Cultivation or Transportation for Sale of illegal drugs in last five (5) years or since becoming an adult.
  • Pattern of abuse of ANY drugs to include marijuana, narcotics, dangerous drugs and prescription drugs. "Pattern of abuse" will be determined based on; type of drugs used, purpose for using, length of time used, and age of individual during use (minor or adult).

Theft Or Misappropriation Of Property

  • Any demonstrated pattern of habitual theft.
  • Any theft while serving in a position of trust.

Acts Constituting a Felony or any Conviction for Domestic Violence Involving Physical Violence:

  • A conviction for any act which would constitute a Felony in the State of Arizona, at any time.

Fraud Or Misrepresentation

  • Any intentional attempt to practice any deception or fraud in the Employment Application, Testing Process, or any failure to properly complete the application.

Driving Record

  • Any recent demonstrated pattern of excessive traffic violations (for positions that require operation of a motor vehicle).

Previous Positions Held: Any of the following may be disqualifiers:

  • Having been disciplined by any employer, including military, as an adult for abuse of leave, gross insubordination, dereliction of duty or persistent failure to follow established policies and regulations.
  • Having been involuntarily dismissed, for any reason other than layoff, from two or more employers as an adult.
  • Having held more than seven paid positions with different employers within the past four years, or more than 15 paid positions with different employers in the past ten years (excluding military). Students who attend school away from their permanent legal residence may be excused from this requirement as well as other persons with a reasonable explanation for an extensive job history.
  • Resigning from any paid position without notice may be disqualifying, except where the presence of a hostile work environment is alleged or other reasonable cause existed.

Military Service

  • If an applicant has served in the military their separation must be classified as "Honorable", "General under Honorable conditions" or "Uncharacterized".

Typical Classification Essential Duties

  • Process Evidence Control Forms and log in property and evidence received from Deputies.
  • Safeguard and maintain proper integrity and chain of custody.
  • Load and transport property and evidence impounded from outlying sub-stations.
  • Prepare seized and forfeited property for auction.
  • Tag, mark, package, and store property and evidence received.
  • Destroy impounded property and evidence as required by law.
  • Respond to inquiries from law enforcement personnel and citizens concerning property in custody.
  • Maintain appropriate release records of disposition of property and evidence.
  • Make accurate comparisons of items from serial numbers or other descriptive features.
  • Maintain and secure biological evidence contained in refrigerators and freezers requiring strict temperature control.
  • Verify stolen weapons through the use of national and state crime information computer systems.
  • Prepare paper work and property or evidence that needs analysis and transport property or evidence to and from the State Department of Public Safety for analysis.
  • Receive vehicles impounded as evidence only and various gasoline powered equipment.
  • Enter information pertaining to property and evidence into a Spillman.
  • Reconcile court orders and process court orders according to final decision.
  • Create and send out Forfeiture Notices to the responsible officer.
  • Research and follow up with the responsible officer on cases that have been adjudicated in order to destroy property or evidence.
  • Compile and keep accurate records for all inventory.
  • Maintain the integrity, professionalism, values, and goals of the Sheriff's Office by assuring that all rules and regulations are followed, and that accountability and public trust are preserved.
  • Maintain absolute confidentiality of work-related issues, customer records, and restricted County information.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Minimum Requirements To Perform Work

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • One (1) year of clerical, computer, or customer service experience.
  • Must pass a thorough background investigation.
  • Arizona residents must have an Arizona Driver's License upon hire; newly established Arizona Residents must have one within 30 days of hire.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Additional technical training and certifications may be required at the direction of the Sheriff or Designee.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Knowledge of Sheriff's Office policies, procedures, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
  • Knowledge of state and Federal laws, regulations, and statutes governing management of public safety services, including rules for the collection, storage, and dissemination of criminal records and confidential information.
  • Knowledge of record keeping, records management principles, and accounting rules and standards.
  • Ability to assess and prioritize multiple tasks, projects, and demands and plan and coordinate the work of others.
  • Ability to use initiative and independent judgment within established procedural guidelines.
  • Ability to interact with people of different social, economic, and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Ability to operate a personal computer and specialized software.
  • Ability to follow and effectively communicate verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to provide effective customer service and deal tactfully and courteously with a demanding and diverse public.
  • Proficiency in measuring distances using a tape measure to determine space requirements for property storage is essential.
  • Demonstrate competence in preparing packages for returning property to owners via mail services or private carriers.
  • Ability to operate machinery and equipment such as electric drills, cutting shears, forklifts, and tractors.
  • Ability to operate a flatbed tow truck for towing evidence vehicles or property.
  • Ability to operate a pickup truck equipped with a lift gate requiring a valid Class D Arizona Driver's License to pick up evidence at substations and crime scenes and deliver property.
  • Ability to operate a tow truck and safely and effectively transport vehicles from scene to evidence vehicle storage lot.
  • Ability to securely attach the tow truck's towing equipment, such as a tow bar, tow dolly, or wheel lift, to the vehicle being towed.

Physical Demands

  • Frequently requires the ability to exert substantial physical effort by pushing and pulling objects in excess of 120 pounds for up to 150 feet in distance. Requires the ability to lift, push or pull objects in excess of 50 pounds frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds constantly to move objects.
  • Frequently requires the ability to balance, climb, crawl, crouch, finger, feel, grasp, handle, reach, kneel, stoop, sit, stand, perform repetitive motions and walk for an extended amount of time.
  • Occasionally requires the ability to operate motor vehicles or heavy equipment.
  • The ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand. Must be able to exchange accurate information.
  • Occasionally ascend/descend stairs or 12 foot ladders while carrying objects weighing in excess of 20 pounds.
  • Must be able to ascend and descend ladders, scaffolds, stairs and work in confined spaces.
  • Must be able to move objects, and use abdominal and lower back muscles to provide support over time without fatigue. Constant movement and use of limbs; this position requires good manual dexterity, coordination and stamina.
  • Must have adequate speech, hearing and eyesight, ability to perceive and distinguish colors or shades of colors, sounds, taste, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals demonstrate mental and physical acuity.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in a rapid changing environment that may require exposure to extreme temperatures from -10 to 40 degree walk-in cooler to extreme heat outdoors.
  • May be required to use a respirator when performing duties requiring exposure to hazardous chemicals and evidence that may be biohazardous and carcinogenic.
  • Must be able to work in small, cramped areas and reach elevated items up to 14 feet high for storage and retrieval purposes.
  • Must be available to work long, irregular schedules and on-call, including nights, overtime, evenings, weekends and holidays, as required by the needs of the agency.
  • Work is performed in an environment making decisions that could lead to major community or organizational consequences if appropriate decisions are not timely.

THIS IS CONSIDERED A SAFETY SENSITIVE POSITION.
This position requires candidates to successfully pass a post-offer drug screen prior to start date and random drug testing.Safety sensitive positions may reasonably be expected to come into contact with blood or other potentially infectious materials in the performance of the work duties and is therefore subject to the vaccination and training provisions presented in the County Blood Borne Pathogen Exposure Control plan.
