General Summary

The Director of Clinical Education (DCE) is responsible for all aspects of the clinical experiences offered to students enrolled in our respiratory care programs, including organization, administration, continuous review, and revision, planning and development of clinical experience locations (with appropriate supervision) for evolving practice skills, and the general effectiveness of the clinical experiences. The DCE will work in collaboration with the program director and department head on all Respiratory Therapy (RT) program initiatives, including training students and faculty, coordinating the RT labs, designing training materials, coordinating projects, furthering best practices among students and faculty, and representing the RT initiatives within the College and externally.

Specific Position Duties

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Fulfill the responsibilities of Director of Clinical Education as specified in the Accreditation Standards for Entry into Respiratory Care Professional Practice document of the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC).
  • Assist the Director of the Respiratory Care Program in academic and administrative matters.
  • Organize and teach courses as assigned by the Director of the Respiratory Care Program and the Dean of Health Sciences to align with CoARC and NBRC objectives/learning outcomes.
  • Promote excellence in teaching and service by setting high standards of academic and professional performance.
  • Evaluate and report student performance and progress and maintain accurate records.
  • Act as a liaison between the clinical affiliate sites and facilitate public relations with hospitals in Texas.
  • Supervise the clinical faculty and prepare clinical rotation schedules at the primary clinical affiliate hospitals. This includes maintaining consistent communication with all clinical faculty.
  • Manage and maintain instructional equipment for student or laboratory use.
  • Actively serve on program, department, and College committees.
  • Maintain communication with other respiratory care professionals regionally and nationally through membership with the American Association of Respiratory Care (AARC).
  • Engage in professional development activities and seek information about new trends and ideas.
  • Together with the department head and the administrative personnel, coordinate and participate in recruitment strategies to enhance or maintain student enrollment.
  • Adhere to policies and procedures of college, clinical affiliates, and any other state, federal or accrediting agency mandates.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) and hold a professional license or certificate as is required by the state in which he or she is employed.
  • Bachelor's degree, respiratory care, or related field
  • Minimum of four (4) years' experience as a Registered Respiratory Therapist with at least two (2) years in clinical respiratory care.
  • Minimum of two (2) years' experience teaching in an accredited respiratory care program either as an appointed faculty member or as a clinical preceptor.
