Position Summary

The Respiratory Nurse provides specialized care to patients with acute or chronic respiratory conditions. This role involves assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating care plans aimed at optimizing patients' respiratory health, managing ventilator support, and providing education to patients and families about respiratory disease management and prevention.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess and monitor patients with respiratory conditions (e.g., COPD, asthma, pneumonia, COVID-19, bronchitis, ARDS).
  • Administer oxygen therapy, nebulized medications, and manage non-invasive or mechanical ventilation.
  • Collaborate with respiratory therapists and physicians to create and adjust treatment plans.
  • Perform respiratory assessments, including pulse oximetry, arterial blood gases (ABGs), and lung auscultation.
  • Educate patients and families on respiratory treatments, smoking cessation, and disease management strategies.
  • Document patient care, progress, and response to interventions accurately and timely.
  • Respond promptly to respiratory emergencies, including code blue and rapid response situations.
  • Maintain infection control standards and ensure proper handling of respiratory equipment.
  • Support interdisciplinary rounds and contribute to care planning discussions.

Qualifications

  • Education: Registered Nurse (RN) license required; Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum 1–2 years of nursing experience, with preference for experience in critical care, pulmonary, or respiratory units.
  • Certifications:
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required.
  • Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN) or Pulmonary Nursing certification preferred.

  • Strong knowledge of respiratory pathophysiology and treatments.
  • Proficient in the use of ventilators and respiratory equipment.
  • Excellent assessment, clinical judgment, and critical-thinking skills.
  • Compassionate communication with patients and families.
  • Team collaboration and interdisciplinary coordination abilities.
