Job Summary

The Licensed Surgical First Assistant provides direct intraoperative assistance to the surgeon during surgical procedures in compliance with Texas licensure requirements and facility policies. This role supports patient safety, surgical efficiency, and optimal outcomes while working under the direct supervision of a licensed physician.

Duties

  • Assist surgeons during operative procedures by providing exposure, hemostasis, tissue handling, and suturing using aseptic techniques.
  • Prepare operating rooms by ensuring all necessary instruments and supplies are sterile and available.
  • Monitor patient vital signs and respond promptly to any changes during surgery.
  • Support discharge planning by coordinating post-operative care instructions and patient education.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of surgical procedures, patient records, and medical terminology in EMR/EHR systems.
  • Adhere to infection control protocols and maintain a sterile environment throughout all procedures.
  • Participate in preoperative assessments, including physiology knowledge application and analysis skills to evaluate patient readiness.
  • Collaborate with hospital medicine, critical care teams, PICU staff, and other specialists to ensure seamless patient care transitions.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in suturing techniques, anatomy knowledge, and understanding of hospital policies related to infection control.
  • Support the surgical team in acute care situations within the ICU or emergency settings as needed.

Experience

Pre-Operative Responsibilities:

- Review patient medical records, surgical plans, and consent documentation

- Prepare the operating room, instruments, and sterile field

- Assist with patient positioning, surgical site preparation, and draping

Intra-Operative Responsibilities:

- Provide exposure, retraction, suctioning, and visualization

- Assist with suturing, wound closure, and hemostasis as directed

- Maintain sterile technique and ensure patient safety

Post-Operative Responsibilities:

- Assist with wound care and dressing application

- Participate in surgical counts and documentation

Qualifications

  • Active Texas license (RNFA, PA, APRN/NP, or CSFA/CSA)
  • BLS required; ACLS preferred
  • Surgical first assist experience required
  • Knowledge of Texas scope-of-practice regulations

Employment Type & Compensation

Full-Time (Saturdays Required)

Compensation competitive and based on experience

Pay: $ $35.00 per hour

Expected hours: 32.0 – 45.0 per week
