MHP is a 48-person structural engineering consulting firm founded in 1973. We provide structural reports and drawings to a diverse clientele, including many architects and building owners. MHP's corporate office is in Long Beach and we have a smaller office in San Diego. We provide health and dental insurance, 401k match, paid holidays and vacation, and other benefits consistent with a professional services firm. The position is full-time in our Long Beach office, with some allowance for remote work considered.
Position Summary:
The Accounting Manager / Controller is responsible for overseeing all accounting and financial reporting functions of the company. This role ensures compliance with GAAP, maintains internal controls, manages the month-end and year-end close processes, and provides strategic support to leadership through accurate financial analysis and reporting. The ideal candidate is a hands-on, detail-oriented individual. Currently the position is filled by a single employee who will be retiring in early 2026. There will be several months of overlap for training on MHP processes and clients.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and manage all day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and bank reconciliations.
- Oversee the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close process and ensure timely and accurate financial reporting.
- Prepare internal financial statements, management reports, and variance analyses.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, tax requirements, and applicable regulatory laws and rules for financial and tax reporting.
- Develop, implement, and monitor internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure data integrity.
- Manage annual tax return schedule preparation and coordination with external tax accountant.
- Optimize and document accounting policies, processes, and systems to improve efficiency and accuracy.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance
- 7+ years of accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a supervisory role and/or overseeing a similar department
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, and internal controls
- Experience with accounting software (e.g., Deltek, NetSuite, SAP, or similar)
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to interact with senior leadership
- High level of integrity and dependability with a strong sense of urgency and results-orientation
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in Architecture/Engineering or other professional service industry
- Experience with Deltek Vision or Vantagepoint software
- Public accounting background (Big 4 or mid-tier firm experience)
- CPA certification strongly preferred
Salary:
- $110k to $160k annual, depends on experience, plus bonus potential
