Laboratory Assistant

Under direction from Laboratory Management, is responsible for the day-to-day operation and oversight of sample management and inventory control. Responsibilities include following established SOPs, safety protocols, accurate record-keeping, and document control procedures. Ensure compliance with all applicable international, federal, state, local, and organizational requirements/policies.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES
· Compliance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), responsible for processing donor samples and transporting samples for testing or storage to ensure specimen integrity.
· Ensure samples are properly stored according to SOPs, which could include unacceptable samples. Prepare and record deviations, unacceptability, or mishaps.
· Verify sample shipments arrive in acceptable conditions, document and process shipments, prepare samples for processing or storage, and check sample orders are present for processing.
· Utilize laboratory equipment/instrumentation to process and archive samples per SOPs. Perform necessary maintenance and cleaning of instrumentation and document actions.
· Rotate and dispose of samples according to schedule or from the direction of laboratory management.
· Facilitate and prepare the return of shipping materials to client locations; all materials are to be packaged and shipped in accordance with SOPs. Prepare shipping documentation and labeling of materials.
· Interact with internal/external customers, suppliers, contractors, and coworkers to facilitate a cohesive work environment; may include, but is not limited to, answering phones, email, or directing internal/external services such as pickups/deliveries, etc.
· Monitor and record temperatures per SOP and immediately inform appropriate personnel if the equipment is not functioning properly. Record variances.
· Ensure accurate records/orders of sample orders in the laboratory information management system as outlined in the SOPs. Locate pending samples for testing in archived storage areas.
· Receive, process, and store/rotate laboratory supplies per SOP; includes usage of electronic inventory system.
· Assist laboratory staff with sample/supply management including transporting samples or supplies from one area to another. Assist with reagent/supply preparation or disposal per SOP.
· Maintain a clean and efficient work environment, which requires disposing of/recycling waste, trash, and related materials. Prepare biohazard boxes for use and disposal. Follow all Health Safety & Environmental (HSE) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) policies and procedures. Promote safety in all actions.
· Utilize computer skills (use of programs, applications, internet, databases, etc.)
· Maintain confidentiality of all personnel, donors, and company information.
· May be cross-trained in other non-testing areas to meet the needs of the business.
· Adhere to all company policies, procedures, and safety rules as stated in the Employee Handbook and as otherwise posted or communicated.
· Any other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS
· High School Diploma or Equivalent Required.
· Must be fluent in English language (verbal and written).
· Must be able to work in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment, maintain production and quality standards
· Must be able to work in a biohazard environment and comply with safety policies and standards
· Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
