The Design Specialist 2 provides engineering technology services to clients for their design projects and technical support requirements.
Core Responsibilities
Task Level Execution
  • Develop a working level of technical knowledge and an experience base that supports the application of technology to the solution of reasonably well-defined problems in design or analysis.
  • Develop the capacity to analyze system architectures, system component relationships.
  • Learn to interpret codes and standards and apply them.
  • Learn to resolve conflicts and accommodate conflicting approaches and objectives at the project level.
  • Resolve or initiate resolution of routine problems that involve the use of conflicting or incomplete information.
  • Look for opportunities to promote new concepts and approaches.
  • Learn to facilitate and coordinate work activities of others within a project team or technical area.
  • Learn to facilitate and coordinate all work activities that affect the quality of administration, proposals, engineering & design, document control, inspection & testing, and commissioning in accordance with Salas O'Brien's Quality Assurance Program.
  • Learn to schedule project activities through the use of planning and scheduling tools.
  • Review and check the work of others.
  • Perform required work activities on an individual basis or within a project team with limited need for direct supervision.
  • Work semi-independently in identifying and solving technical problems.
  • Learn to provide training and mentoring for subordinate technical staff; learn to take an active role in personnel development through providing comprehensive and timely project personnel performance reviews
  • Learn to seek out client perspectives on the Salas O'Brien products, personnel and services rendered.
  • Present a positive company image and be aware and supportive of customer needs.
  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned or deemed appropriate of the position by management.
  • Perform effectively as a member of a design team
Communicate Progress with Team Leaders
  • Recognize the need for and initiate corrective action to address shortcomings in design or engineering processes that run counter to customer's or Salas O'Brien's quality or safety requirements. Support root cause assessments and recommend practical solutions to underlying problems.
  • Under guidance, coordinate the development of inputs needed to establish project estimates and oversee the processes by which projects are kept on schedule and within budget.

Continuous Improvement of Technical Skills

  • Keep abreast of new products, processes and technology.
  • Seeks to build knowledge in areas of Salas O'Brien and industry business that will compliment acquired technical skills.
Scope and Accountability
  • Support client projects from proposal to completion. Make decisions at a technical and quality required to support attainment of Salas O'Brien's goals for customer satisfaction and meet corporate earnings objectives.
  • Possess the knowledge and authority sufficient to make routine decisions in their areas of expertise.
  • Be responsible to their supervisor for work activities involving the application of engineering technology knowledge to client's projects.
  • Incumbent is accountable to Salas O'Brien Operations management and senior officers for the proper execution of their professional responsibilities in an ethical and professional manner.
Qualifications and Requirements

Two to four-year degree in Engineering Technology or comparable on-the- job training. It is preferred that the incumbent have formal training in their areas of expertise.

Work Environment
  • Office environment, construction area or factory floor not requiring the lifting or moving of heavy loads.
  • Routinely requires climbing ladders, scaffolding and working significantly above ground elevation.
  • May routinely involves a high noise ambient, elevated temperatures, dust, dirt, and hazardous chemicals requiring protective clothing.
  • Work may involve traveling to customer's facilities. A valid driver's license or other assured means of transportation to job sites is essential.

Safety

Salas O'Brien requires that all its employees take work place safety as a highest personal commitment. Work places are to be kept free of hazards (tripping, burn, shock etc.). While at a client's facility, all clients' safety rules are to be observed without exception. When required, safety glasses, hard hats, ear protection, breathing protection and protective clothing will be worn, and safe work rules will always be strictly observed.
