POSITION SUMMARY:

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The Aquatics Specialist at YMCA Camp Wakonda maintains a supportive, positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals. The Aquatics Specialist supervises lifeguards and co-leads and participates in weekly aquatics in-services. The incumbent must demonstrate our four core values: Caring, Respect, Honesty, and Responsibility.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assume role as head lifeguard for swimming pool and all lake activities.
  • Co-lead and participate in weekly aquatics in-services.
  • Supervise lifeguards on duty.
  • Responsible for the safety and well-being of participants during aquatic activities in the pool and lake while effectively and courteously enforcing all rules, regulations, and policies.
  • Assist cabin counselors in assuming full responsibility for all the campers in assigned cabin.
  • Maintain high standards of health and safety in all activities for campers.
  • Participate as a member of the camp staff team to deliver and supervise evening programs, special events, overnights, and other all-camp activities and camp functions.
  • Provide outstanding and consistent customer service to all camp guests.
  • Attend staff meetings and trainings.
  • Responsible for strict adherence to policies and procedures related to safety and other regulations.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be available between May 19th through August 9th, 2026.
  • Must Reside on Camp Premises.
  • Must be 18 years old with a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have YMCA Lifeguard, Red Cross Lifeguard or equivalent.
  • CPR Professional & First Aid, AED/O2 certified.
  • Experience in lifeguarding at waterfronts.
  • Able to stand for long periods of time in a warm, humid environment.
  • Able to observe camper behaviors and assess its appropriateness and apply appropriate management techniques, as well as enforce appropriate safety and emergency procedures to the situation.
  • Must be able to assist campers in the event of an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury)
  • Exemplify the YMCA core values of "Caring, Honesty, Respect, Responsibility."

  • Safety-sensitive position: Apply appropriate safety and emergency procedures.
  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to weather and program activities.
  • Physical ability to respond to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength

    and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of staff.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds.
  • Endurance including prolonged standing, some bending, stooping, walking long distances, hiking, climbing, and stretching.
  • Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate outdoor equipment and camp activities.
  • Work irregular hours with limited or simple equipment and facilities.
  • Daily exposure to the sun, heat, insects, and animals.
