Medical Assistant Orthopedic Surgical Practice

This position assists the Physician and Physician Assistant's with daily office procedures to maintain consistent quality patient care. This position will also be responsible for learning the customer service portion of the business working at the front desk and handling administrative duties when called upon. Must be ready for a fast-paced environment. Must have reliable transportation. Possible travel required between our office locations.

Clinical Responsibilities:

  • Medical Assisting, rooming patients into exam rooms, collect and enter basic medical history into Athena. Prepare patient to be seen by the provider.
  • Under the direction of a physician, may perform wound dressings changes and application and suture removal.
  • Applies and maintains casts, splints and orthopedic soft good appliances as directed by a Physician or Physician Assistant. Provides patients and families with instructions on cast care, crutch walking and orthopedic appliance care.
  • Provide patient education with post-op incision care and cast care as appropriate.
  • Fit patients with braces and complete proper documentation for proper durable medical equipment billing.
  • Demonstrates sterile techniques, as appropriate, in the performance of and/or assisting with procedures.
  • Documents procedure and other appropriate information on the medical record.
  • Assist providers with drawing up injections, Ultrasound guided injections.
  • Maintains office supplies inventory by checking stock/rooms to determine inventory level; anticipating needed supplies; placing and expediting orders for supplies, verifying receipt of supplies.

Administrative Responsibilities:

  • Support the Physician, Physician Assistant's administrative needs while caring for our patients.
  • Assist is all assigned areas of maintaining patient medical records. Scanning documents into Athena.
  • Train on all Front Desk appointment scheduling duties for cross-coverage as needed.
  • Offer clear professional interactions with all external contacts such as imaging facilities, hospitals, primary care physicians and other specialist's offices.
  • Understanding of universal precautions, sharps safety, bloodborne pathogen and biohazard safety required.
  • Greet patients, vendors and guests in a pleasant, friendly and professional manner- represent Advanced Orthopedics New England. Be a role model for other Staff.
  • Be responsive to patient requests and concerns.
  • Overall responsibility is to be an active employee that works to attend to patient and customer needs.
  • All forms and methods of communication must be professional, adhere to all HIPAA guidelines and be in keeping with group and office policy.
  • Provide quality customer service.

Required or Preferred Qualifications

  • High school diploma
  • Must meet one of the following qualifications: (1) Certified Medical Assistant through appropriate board (i.e. American Association of Medical Assistants), (2) registered through appropriate board (i.e. The American Registry of Medical Assistants), (3) Certification of Orthopedic Technologist (OTC or ROT), (4) Two years of experience in a physician office setting.
  • Knowledge of casts, splints, orthotic, and other similar device applications preferred. Experience operating cast saw, spreader and other cast tools and equipment preferred. We will train for these functions.
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills required.
  • Ability to build a positive rapport with patients quickly.
  • Current knowledge of medical terminology and medical insurance requirements, including workers' compensation
  • Flexibility in schedule
  • Ability to take direction from the provider and provide education to patients and family clearly and effectively.

Physical Demands

Ability to stand on your feet for prolong periods. Ability to reach, push and pull. Ability to type intermittently up to four hours daily. Ability to lift and/or carry up to 50 pounds.

Job Type: Full-time

Expected hours: 37.5 – 40 per week
