Department Overview:
The Department of Political Science was founded in 1974 and currently has 38 ladder-rank and 11 adjunct faculty who represent a broad spectrum of backgrounds, methodologies, and approaches. A relatively young department, Political Science has skyrocketed to prominence among peer institutions in the United States. The most recent National Academy of Sciences study ranks UCSD among the top graduate programs in political science in the country. The doctoral program encompasses four broad sub-fields: American politics, comparative politics, international relations, and political theory. Each year, the Department of Political Science supports nearly 100 scheduled undergraduate courses, 40 graduate courses, 50+ summer session courses, over 12,000 undergraduate course enrollments, and 1400 undergraduate majors; The department receives an estimated 300 graduate program applications and attracts significant levels of extramural funding in support of research projects. Currently housed within the Department of Political Science, Computational Social Science (CSS) is a growing minor, master's, and PhD specialization program.

Position Overview
The CSS Program Coordinator will be an integral thought partner and implementer to support all students in the recently-launched Computational Social Science program at UC San Diego and to have impact with undergraduate, master's and PhD student populations. With the unique opportunity to grow Social Science's first interdisciplinary self-supporting master's program, and to maintain the success of the CSS minor and Ph.D. specialization, this position includes serving as the student affairs contact person for students, staff, and faculty, as well as off-campus entities and organizations, program planning and administration, advising students taking program courses, outreach and recruitment activities, and supporting student success, belongingness and career preparation through advising and events. Under the general supervision of the Student Affairs Manager, this position has the opportunity to build the future of Computational Social Science at UC San Diego.

This position requires excellent interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively with a large and diverse population, and excellent computer skills for data analysis and reporting functions.

  • This position offers a hybrid (remote/on-site) work arrangement- two days on-site and three days remote. The on-site location is on the main campus in La Jolla.
  • Overtime and weekends may be required

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of advising and counseling techniques. Proven experience in counseling college student population and parents, and strong familiarity with student development in higher education. Demonstrated skill in providing expert assessment of students' curriculum needs based on career goals, academic training and research history.
  • Knowledge of University-specific computer application programs and pertinent databases. Working knowledge of IT systems and demonstrated ability to use computer software systems for e-mail, word processing, and spreadsheets. Knowledge of university databases/campus systems including ISIS and TritonLink.
  • Ability to multi-task; verbal and written communication skills. Ability to manage a heavy workload and work under pressing deadlines with frequent interruptions. Ability to initiate, plan, develop, implement, manage and evaluate multiple programmatic activities independently and complete work in a timely manner. Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Interpersonal skills. Strong interpersonal skills including tact, diplomacy, humor and flexibility with a broad population (faculty, parents, students, staff, university administrators, general public).
  • Multicultural competencies; ability to work with diverse populations. Skill to advise/counsel and listen to diverse personalities using independent and mature judgment.
  • Basic knowledge of student immigration and visa processes pertaining to international students and scholars.
  • Ability in problem identification and reasoning. Strong ability to anticipate problems, identify and analyze options, and implement corrective actions. Demonstrated skill in problem solving, conflict resolution and crisis management.
  • Skills in service orientation, organization, active listening, and critical thinking. Ability to interact with and clarify procedures for students and faculty by means of collecting, researching and coordinating the implementation of new policies. Strong ability to analyze complex data and develop recommendations and reports.
  • Knowledge of University processes and procedures. Knowledge of University and departmental policies relating to undergraduate and graduate students, general education requirements, course scheduling, and educational organization to ensure effective interpretation of educational material and regulations.
  • Understanding of University rules and regulations.
  • Ability to handle sensitive issues, provide counseling and maintain confidentiality.
  • Events/Conference/Workshop Planning: Demonstrated knowledge of conference/event cost analysis and drafting budget proposal, with skill in monitoring expenditures for each event. Demonstrated ability to analyze and evaluate data relating to event development and production. Knowledge of programming resources and evaluation techniques on campus and in the community. Knowledge of university and department policies and procedures relating to travel, accounting, purchasing and entertainment.
  • Skills in Promotions/Marketing and Outreach: Demonstrated skill in working with publicity and in developing appropriate materials to promote programs. Ability to use Facebook and other social media used heavily by students to enhance student awareness of and participation in programs and services. Experience with tabling at in person recruitment and informational events.
  • Identify opportunities and make recommendations to broaden and further the department's strategic and instructional aims.
  • Demonstrated Computer skills: Google Suites, Website maintenance, Microsoft Suites, etc. Demonstrated experience with a Mac.

Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $55,400 - $93,800 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $ $44.92

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
