What You'll Do:

The City of High Point is seeking an Electrician to maintain and repair the electrical systems that power our water and wastewater treatment plants and pump/lift stations. This entry-level skilled trade role is perfect for someone who enjoys hands-on work, problem solving, and making a real difference every day.

Essential Tasks & Responsibilities:

Electrician I

  • Perform preventive maintenance on pump control and lighting systems to keep facilities operating smoothly.
  • Assist in maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing electrical control systems.
  • Help install new electrical equipment and upgrades.
  • Use electrical tools such as volt meters, ohm meters, meggers, phase meters, alligator jumpers, pipe benders, and more.
  • Drive a City service vehicle to work sites throughout the water and wastewater system.
  • Follow all OSHA and City safety standards and policies to ensure a safe work environment.

Electrician II

All of the above plus:

  • Installs electrical equipment such as motors, motor starters, switches, lighting, etc.
  • Troubleshoots basic electrical problems.
  • Selects and sizes wires, conduit, fuses, overload relays, circuit breakers, etc.
  • Checks and repairs electric systems of diesel generators.
  • Disconnects and transports major motors for shop repair.
  • Assists in maintaining inventory of spare parts.
  • Assists in preparing, recording and reporting on plant operation, maintenance, and repair.

Electrician III

All of the duties of an Electrician I and II plus:

  • Maintains extensive equipment filing system of appropriate drawings, manufacturers literature and related manuals.
  • Maintains spare parts inventory.
  • Performs general skilled maintenance and repair of electric motors, high and low voltage switching equipment, electrical control systems, circuits, and electrical system of diesel generator, as needed to assist.
  • Prepares, records, and reports on plant operation, maintenance, and repair.
  • Takes on a leadership role in the absence of the Lead Electrician.
  • Maintains extensive equipment filing system of appropriate drawings, manufacturers literature and related manuals;
  • Maintains spare parts inventory;
  • Performs general skilled maintenance and repair of electric motors, high and low voltage switching equipment, electrical control systems, circuits, and electrical system of diesel generator, as needed to assist;
  • Prepares, records, and reports on plant operation, maintenance, and repair;
  • Takes on a leadership role in the absence of the Lead Electrician.

Qualifications:

Minimum Required Qualifications

Electrician I

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Experience with 120V & 240V electrical systems
  • Familiarity with sizing wires & fuses
  • Ability to read and understand nameplate information on electric motors – voltage, amps, rpm, duty cycle, and frame size
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other city departments, employees, and the public
  • Must be highly detail-oriented and project a professional manner.
  • Must be able to climb lift station ladders

Electrician II

All of the above plus:

  • Experience with 480V electrical systems
  • Experience with motor starters – able to size starters by equipment and connection
  • Familiarity with 9-lead wiring
  • Familiarity with the National Electrical Code (NEC)

Electrician III

All of the above plus:

  • Considerable experience doing low and medium voltage industrial electrical work
  • Considerable experience maintaining and repairing equipment used in water and wastewater treatment
  • Ability to work independently to perform troubleshooting and repair from start to finish
  • Holds a North Carolina Electrical License

Physical Requirements

Hearing/Speaking –

  • (Talking - Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken word).
  • (Hearing - Perceiving nature of sounds by ear).
  • Hearing in both ears must be average of 40 decibels in each of the following frequency ranges: 1000, 2000 and 3000 hz.

Visual Abilities - the ability to perceive via eyesight is required for this position:

  • Acuity, far - Clarity of vision at 20 feet or more. Must be able to see surrounding terrain, people, vehicles, buildings, conductors, etc., from a distance. Necessary to see wide span of area while viewing work site during daily routine and emergency situations such as storms.  Both eyes 20/25 - R 20/30 - L 20/30 corrected
  • Acuity, near - Clarity of vision at 20 inches or less. Must be able to see and read transformer name plate, files, work orders, detailed construction drawings and wiring connections. Both eyes 20/22 corrected
  • Depth Perception - Three-dimensional vision. Ability to judge distance and space relationships so as to see objects where and as they actually are. Must be able to judge distances so as to use both hands in performing different tasks at the same. Essential in maintaining proper safety code clearances. Depth Perception - 4
  • Field of Vision - Area that can be seen up and down or to right or left while eyes are fixed on a given point. Must be able to see wide span to cover program area while focusing on the job at hand.  Must be alert to all that is happening.
  • Accommodation - Adjustment of lens of eye to bring an object into sharp focus.  This item is especially important when doing near-point work at varying distances from eye. Must be able to adjust the eye lens to glance quickly at participants or other people who are located at various distances.
  • Color Vision - Ability to identify and distinguish colors. Necessary in determining proper phase connection. Necessary in using National Electrical Color Codes for electrical installations and for all Lift Station, Metering and Conductor tagging and installations.
  • Night Vision - Ability to identify and distinguish between objects at night. Visual acuity to be correctable to 20/40 in either eye.
  • Respiratory - Breathing. Must be able to use respiratory protective equipment such as enclosed facemask. Must have a breathing ability of 60% on the FEV and FVC tests results in order to function properly in underground lift stations.
  • The senses of SIGHT, SMELL, HEARING and TOUCH are Required.
  • Must have physical stamina to withstand working under adverse weather conditions.

Medium Work

  • Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or
  • Up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or
  • Up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects and/or equipment. 
  • Work requires walking, standing, climbing, carrying, bending, stooping, lifting, reaching, stretching, balancing and sitting on different surfaces. There is significant use of arms, hands, legs, feet and back.

Types of Physical Demands

  • Reaching, Handling, and Grasping: (Reaching - Extending the hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction). (Handling - Seizing, holding, grasping, turning, or otherwise working with hand or hands (fingering not involved). (Grasping - Picking, pinching, or otherwise working with fingers primarily (rather than the whole hand or arm as in handling). All above are requirements of this job. Worker must have manual dexterity in both arms and legs. Musculo-Skeletal System requires flexibility for space maneuverability in underground lift stations. Worker must be able to climb and descend ladders using both hands while carrying tools and protective gloves and equipment. Must be able to use rubber protective gloves while installing small items such as washers, screws and fuses. Must be able to climb ladders and tolerate confined and enclosed spaces.

  • Using Basic Arithmetic: Must be able to measure for parts or tools needed for assignment, use electronic, mechanical, digital and analog devices, make note of inventory requirements, and count parts and supplies upon receipt; to solve basic speed and flow equations.

Language Ability

  • Read: Ability to read safety and other manuals, instructions, equipment readings, report information, ordinances, rules, regulations, street names and signs, work orders and other documents relating to the job.
  • Write: Ability to write figures, reports, make notes as needed to complete records and labels.
  • Speak: Ability to be conversant in voice and diction so as to participate in discussions and communicate well with supervisor, co-workers, and other City personnel in person, over two-way radio and by telephone; ability to perform proper and clear communication rapidly during emergency situations.

Environmental Conditions

Physical Surroundings:

  • The Worker is subject to Inside and Outside Environmental Conditions: Exposed to the various weather conditions and temperatures. The worker is required to work in extremely hot weather and extremely cold weather as well as in rain, sleet, snow, ice, fog, smoke, wind and lightning storms. This may require the individual to wear the same clothing and continue work for a period of time to exceed the normal work schedule during emergencies. Worker is subject to other conditions such as pollen, creosote and other substances that may cause allergic reaction. Worker may be working in close proximity to sewage.

Hazards:

  • Employee will be exposed to grease, lubricant and petroleum products, hazardous materials and chemicals associated with a utility plant facility. Work is subject to final standards of OSHA on bloodborne pathogens.

Machinery/Tools/Work Aids/Other Equipment:

  • Service vehicles, boom truck, personal computer, SCADA computer / network, hand tools, power tools, hoists, telephone, two-way radios, pens, pencils, O&M manuals, Personnel Resolution, rules, regulations, ordinances, policies, ladders and tools used in the electrical trade.
