Referral Coordinator

Overall Purpose:

The Referral Coordinator will be responsible for processing all routine and urgent referrals to providers for the purpose of obtaining specialist care by our internal and external specialty providers. The Referral Coordinator will function as the liaison between P3 Medical Group and all network specialty providers. This will include a significant amount of interaction with clinic staff, as well as paperwork handling to submit the referrals, faxing, scanning and telephone calls to the patients and specialty providers.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Initiate referrals within timetable guidelines
  • Build and manage routine and urgent referrals to specialty network providers (following all specific guidelines required by these providers)
  • Prepare and process all necessary chart documents and information to the referral source
  • Communicate with the specialty network providers
  • Schedule appointments with specialty network providers, when applicable
  • Communicate with the patients
  • Verify patient insurance eligibility
  • Obtain prior authorizations
  • Complete Electronic Medical Record (EMR) tasks
  • Process an average of 35 referrals per day
  • Documentation of all referrals related interactions
  • Communicate with providers/staff promptly
  • Back up to the main patient support center team

Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Bachelor's degree preferred
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience as a Referral Coordinator
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience working with Electronic Medical Records (EMR)
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in a healthcare or clinical setting
  • Experience with Microsoft Office products

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) is desirable
  • Possess a high standard of professionalism
  • Possess good customer service in verbal and written communication
  • Possess strong people skills and ability to work well with others
  • Ability to effectively manage changing situations
  • Work independently as well as in a group setting
  • Ability to multi-task, work with interruptions and meet deadlines
