Requirements
Deputy Director, Ruesch Center for the Cure of GI Cancers within Georgetown University's Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center. The Deputy Director drives execution of the Ruesch Center's strategic plan by overseeing program planning, partnership development, team leadership, and financial management to expand resources and deliver high-impact services for a high-volume GI cancer population. The role exists to cultivate new funding and collaborations, lead advocacy and research support, and identify programmatic growth opportunities that advance the Center's mission.

The Deputy Director develops and administers integrated communications and marketing, overseeing the Ruesch team in the execution of signature events (Symposium, Patient Summit, Golf Tournament, Luminary Awards), digital and print campaigns (website, newsletters, social media, video), and media relations. The Deputy Director monitors performance metrics, guides creative services, supports clinician outreach, collaborates on stewardship and education initiatives, and represents the Center internally and externally to ensure cohesive, effective programming across the Lombardi Cancer Center, MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, and the MedStar Georgetown Cancer Institute, reporting to the Center Director, Dr. John Marshall.

Duties Include But Are Not Limited To

  • Set strategy and performance - In partnership with the Associate Director of Operations and the Scientific Director, establish strategic objectives, performance targets, and project-management frameworks that align Ruesch Center initiatives with institutional priorities and ensure consistency, scalability, and transparency across programs.
  • Grow GI research portfolio - Support and advocate for the 72 GI Research Working Group members across 13 departments, increase grant activity and awareness of Lombardi GI research, and track project progress to expand the Center's research footprint.
  • Oversee resources and financial management - Manage resource allocation for operations, including the $650K operating budget, authorize major expenditures, identify new revenue opportunities, and optimize financial growth.
  • Lead communications, media, and event strategy-Develop and execute strategic communications and marketing campaigns (digital, print, video, media relations), oversee the Ruesch team in managing signature events (Symposium, Patient Summit, Golf Tournament, Luminary Awards), and maintain flexible availability for urgent communications, breaking stories, and partner events.
  • Build and manage teams - Grow and develop the Head of Operations & Patient Experience through regular performance reviews, professional development planning, and ongoing feedback while providing team oversight and executive support to the Director.
  • Drive partnership engagement and representation - Convene and chair cross-functional leadership meetings and steering committees; engage clinicians, researchers, patients, advocacy organizations, health media, and Georgetown/MedStar staff; and represent the Center at executive forums and external conferences to amplify impact and facilitate high-level introductions.
  • Ensure performance monitoring, compliance, and fundraising support - Review dashboards and KPIs, escalate and resolve risks, lead data-informed course corrections, ensure institutional and regulatory compliance, and collaborate with the Science Director and Director of Advancement on grant strategy, proposals, budgets, and donor stewardship.

Work Interactions
The Deputy Director of Business & Communications reports to the Director of the Ruesch Center, Dr. John Marshall, and independently implements Center activities while ensuring coordination across the Lombardi Cancer Center, MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, and the MedStar Georgetown Cancer Institute. This position directly supervises the Head of Operations & Patient Experience and works closely with the Scientific Director and the Director of Advancement to align operations, research, communications, fundraising, and stewardship. The Deputy Director's work shapes program priorities, resource allocation, and external engagement, influencing clinicians, researchers, administrative teams, patients, and community partners to advance integrated clinical care, research, and education. By aligning Center initiatives with institutional priorities and representing the Center across internal and external forums, the Deputy Director supports Georgetown University's mission of cura personalis, academic excellence, and translational impact in cancer care and research.

Requirements And Qualifications

  • Master's degree in communications, marketing, health, or a related field
  • Minimum of 5 years in a leadership role within a medical, advocacy, or non-profit organization, overseeing program planning, budgeting, and operations
  • Proven excellence in written and verbal communication, with experience in digital and print channels, website management, and social media
  • Solid understanding of cancer clinical research from the patient perspective and collaboration with patient advocacy groups and academic medical centers
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret policy and engage policy-makers
  • Track record of building and nurturing strategic partnerships
  • Effective working in both small and large team settings
  • Flexible schedule with availability for after-hours support as needed

Pay Range
The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:

$80, $157,238.93

Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate's individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University's business needs and external factors.
