AGENCY: Housing Opportunities Made Equal is a nationally recognized civil rights agency which, since 1963, has led the struggle for fair housing in Western New York. HOME operates under government contracts to assist victims of housing discrimination, conduct educational programs, and provide mobility and housing counseling services

QUALIFICATIONS: Ideal candidate would have an Associate's or Bachelor's Degree, or comparable experience, in social work, behavioral science, or a closely related field, and demonstrable skills in case management and human services. Candidates must have a demonstrated passion for social justice and a commitment to fair housing.

COMPENSATION: $46,000-$48,000 plus a benefit package which includes health insurance, 14 paid holidays annually, and generous paid time off. HOME is a Public Service Loan Forgiveness program eligible employer.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the supervision of the Associate Director and Intake Manager, the Fair Housing Specialist is responsible for providing case management services to victims of housing discrimination. This is a full time, 40 hour per week hybrid position. Staff are expected to work in-office a minimum of two days per week.

Specific responsibilities of this position include:

  • Respond promptly and effectively to housing-related inquiries and requests for service.
  • Complete full intake and assessment for clients experiencing housing discrimination, providing emotional support and case management services while maintaining regular communication via phone, mail, and/or email.
  • Provide information on landlord/tenant rights and responsibilities to clients with non-discrimination housing situations.
  • Provide referrals to resource agencies, as appropriate.
  • Assist with the investigation of housing discrimination allegations, including evidence gathering and analysis.
  • Work with clients to empower them to self-advocate, particularly with requests for reasonable accommodations and modifications.
  • Assist with case preparation for legal proceedings.
  • Maintain well-organized and detailed client case files and electronic data entry.
  • Conciliate validated allegations of discrimination when possible.
  • Demonstrate commitment to HOME's mission and civil rights.
  • Other duties as assigned.
