YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The primary responsibilities of this role, Chief of Staff for North America Public Affairs, Science and Sustainability are to:
- Lobbying advocacy, political strategy, philanthropic strategy;
- Strategic partner and advisor to the VP of PASS ;
- Special projects + foundational relationships
The Chief of Staff for the N.A. Public Affairs, Science and Sustainability team reports to the Vice President of PASS and is responsible for managing key initiatives, aligning team priorities, providing counsel on team strategy and culture, and engaging with key external stakeholders in the Washington, DC and Bayer communities The ideal candidate has strong leadership, communication, relationship building and strategic thinking skills. This role will be an integral member of the public affairs representing Bayer to government officials, building relationships with key organizations, and developing and executing political and philanthropic strategies in accordance with our organizational priorities.
- Partner with federal and state government relations, communications and other team members to generate focus and support for Bayer public policy positions, issues and efforts to shape the public policy frameworks in support of Bayer businesses;
- Further key political relationships with congressional and other elected officials, including through scheduled visits to Bayer sites and facilities to interact with site leadership and employees;
- Support and provide direct lobbying advocacy before Congress and Executive Branch for Bayer policy priorities;
- Leverage and support key trade association advocacy efforts on aligned issues;
- Advisor to VP of PASS, handling sensitive matters with discretion, political savvy, and integrity;
- Oversight of high-priority projects to ensure the NA PASS team runs efficiently and priorities are delivered on time with the ability to build consensus without direct authority, fostering collaboration and accountability;
- Co-create Bayer's philanthropic strategy in the United States and build partnerships with key community organizations;
- Accountable for monitoring and anticipating activities that could impact Bayer's operations in the United States and developing plans to improve our corporate reputation;
- The role, both personally and through the government affairs team, represents Bayer before the highest levels of government by building strong, enduring relationships with officials;
- Maximizes the effectiveness of government and trade associations by making them aware of key Bayer priorities, the impact on our business and the imperative to support them proactively in coordination with the relevant divisions.
WHO YOU ARE
Bayer seeks an incumbent who possesses the following:
Required Qualifications:
- Significant corporate, NGO or association experience is strongly desired;
- Extensive experience leading political and/or philanthropic strategic development;
- Strong political acumen and understanding of internal and external political landscapes and the ability to navigate them with diplomacy and tact;
- Adaptable and resilient with the ability to remain calm and effective under pressure;
- Proven ability to develop strong relationships and work effectively and productively with Congressional staff, Members of Congress, political staff and other external and internal stakeholders; will proactively engage on important public policy issues affecting Bayer;
- Exceptional understanding of business, public policy development and politics, preferably with knowledge of agriculture and healthcare. Strong strategic planning skill and the ability to be forward-thinking and proactive;
- Collaborative working style that creates buy-in and commitment from colleagues and stakeholders;
- Ability to work comfortably in a fast –paced environment where priorities and direction may change frequently;
- Proven ability to effectively interact with employees at all levels of the Bayer organization in all regions, including senior management;
- Must be professional and have the ability to handle people and situations with tact, diplomacy, discretion, confidentiality and a sense of urgency;
- Experience presenting before senior executives and policymakers on important legislative and policy issues;
- Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills with impeccable ethics and a high-level of integrity. Strong time management, budget and organizational skills required;
- Extensive experience working with and managing boards;
- Ability to identify, manage and develop talent. Exceptional verbal, written and listening skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- The Director will have 10+ years working in philanthropy, communications, government relations or other relevant experience.
Employees can expect to be paid a salary between $188,247 to $282,370. Additional compensation may include a bonus or commission (if relevant). Additional benefits include health care, vision, dental, retirement, PTO, sick leave, etc.. This salary range is merely an estimate and may vary based on an applicant's location, market data/ranges, an applicant's skills and prior relevant experience, certain degrees and certifications, and other relevant factors.
