School Resource Officer

The City of Winter Garden is seeking School Resource Officers. Under direction of a Police Sergeant, the School Resource Officer (SRO) will be tasked with a wide variety of law enforcement activities related to the school environment to ensure for the general safety and security of their assigned school. Applicants must be active or retired law enforcement and have already attended or are able to attend a 40-hour NASRO Basic SRO course funded by the school district. Scheduling options of 10 or 12 months annually are available.
SRO responsibilities include building positive relationships between students and faculty and requires the ability to effectively fulfill the roles of mentor, instructor and law enforcement officer in order to meet the goals of the SRO program and to create and maintain a safe, secure and positive learning environment. Responsibilities include disseminating information, arbitrating disputes, providing assistance through referrals, property protection, crime detection and prevention, investigative, and other public safety services.
The SRO holds the same level of authority and responsibility imparted upon full-time Law Enforcement Officers, as the SRO's authority is not limited to the confines of their assigned school. As such, they are expected to take action when circumstances dictate or when called upon to do so by a Commanding Officer of the Department.
Hours of Work:
- Monday—Friday 40 hour schedule running concurrent with the SRO's assigned school. Excludes Teacher Planning and School Holidays. May also require overtime for school events/activities that fall outside of the school's standard hours.
- Scheduling options of either 10 or 12 months annually are available. SROs with 12 month schedules will be assigned to patrol and/or other duties during summer break.
Benefits/Incentives:
- Pay range is $ $48.48 per hour. Starting pay rate depends on qualifications.
- $29.74 hourly minimum, with an additional $1.00/hour for speciality unit: SRO.
- SROs averaging 30+ hours per week annually are eligible for City benefits including Medical, Dental and Vision insurance (employee-only Medical coverage is 100% City-paid), Pension Plan, City-paid Life and Long-Term Disability, Vacation and Sick Leave, and 10 paid holidays annually.
- A take-home vehicle for travel to/from work and other official business. City vehicles must be turned in before summer break for those not working during this time.
- Up to 40 hours annually of paid training, typically during school holidays, teacher workdays or summer break.
