Job Description Summary
Mid-level role in Plant Instrumentation & Control Systems Design team. Primary focus is boiling water reactor rod control system and controls product development engineer. Responsible for supporting original equipment manufacturer (OEM) rod control systems in operating fleet, and design of rod control systems for new reactors. Scope includes: 1) requirements definition; 2) design specifications; 3) development, test, and qualification plans, and 4) field deployment of rod control and rod control blocking systems and other controls systems and applications.
Job Description
Essential Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain an understanding of rod control systems used in existing and new boiling water reactors (BWRs).
- Review and implement system based on requirements specifications developed based on customer requirements, technical regulations and industry standards.
- Prepare and maintain system design artifacts such as logic diagrams, input/output (I/O) lists, equipment and cabinet layout diagrams or drawings, system elementary drawings, hardware wiring/connection diagrams, bills of material, various plans and reports, etc.
- Perform and document technology assessment reports and/or trade studies supporting selection of hardware and software technologies for incorporation into rod control systems.
- Support creating feasibility studies describing rod control system conceptual architectures and functional descriptions.
- Support system design reviews.
- Prepare high-level software design documents describing software program architecture, inputs, transfer functions, algorithms, and outputs.
- Perform hands on development, configuration and integration of prototype hardware and software for programmable logic controllers, industrial PC's, and human-machine interfaces, and Distributed Control Sy.
- Develop prototype system software using object-oriented programming (C/C++), PLC ladder logic, and Human Machine Interface (HMI) tools to support system proof of concept testing.
- Configure signal conditioning electronics, motor controllers, motors, and network components.
- Prepare proof-of-concept test procedures using system requirements and functional description.
- Perform and document results of system proof-of-concept testing.
- Develop and configure test equipment and simulators for software development and testing.
- Maintain environmental, health and safety qualifications needed to perform laboratory work.
- Support on-site system installation, acceptance, commissioning, and start-up testing.
- Prepare system operation and maintenance or testing documentation.
- Support the team with technical support to aid customers in troubleshooting rod control system failures.
- Support identification, assessment, resolution, and corrective/preventive actions needed to address nonconformances and conditions adverse to quality.
- Execute work defined by work plans, process documents, work deliverables templates
- Ensure compliance with GEH procedures/processes, nuclear regulations, applicable industry standards, and customer requirements.
- Support simplification, process improvement, and cost-out initiatives.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Physics, Computer Science or Technology, Mechatronics, or equivalent 4-year technical degree
- 5 years' experience with productivity software [i.e. Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio]
3 years' experience with "from scratch" system and software design, configuration, analysis, testing, and modeling related to:
Distributed Control Systems (DCS) OR
- Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) OR
Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA)
2 years' experience designing human machine interface screens or graphical user interfaces
- 2 years' experience working with motor positioning/servo systems using closed loop control
- 2 years' experience developing software supporting serial and Ethernet data communications
- 2 years' with configuration and operation of networking components
- 3 years' experience working under a structured systems and software development lifecycle process including use of industry standards, design practices, and guides for software development and testing.

- Relocation to Wilmington, NC is required.

Desired Qualifications
- Master's of Science in Electrical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Physics, Computer Science or Technology, Mechatronics, or equivalent 4-year technical degree.
- 4 years of experience with power generation or industrial controls equipment.
- 4 years of experience with instrumentation and control system new product development projects.
- 2 years' experience developing set points and calibration methodologies.
- 4 years of experience in "from scratch" programmable logic controller (PLC) or other industrial platforms like the Siemens Simatic S7 PLC platform or the Stratus Fault-Tolerant Server.
- 4 years' experience in coding development on distributed control systems (DCS) software design including GE Mark-VIe DCS.
- 3 years of experience developing human machine interfaces or graphical user interfaces.
- 4 years of experience developing C/C++ software in accordance with industry standards.
- 4 years of experience working with motor positioning/servo systems using closed loop control like the CntrlX Motor Controller or Safety PLC.
- 2 years of hands-on experience wiring cabinets, building connectors, installation, and configuration of electrical/electronic components for product testing.
- Prior nuclear power plant systems or operator training including reactor theory.
- Clear thinker, detail oriented, insightful, quantitative, results oriented analyst and engineer – Able to make reasoned, sound, and timely decisions.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and writing.
- Self-starter with energy and positive "Can-Do" attitude with legacy of delivering on commitments and stretch goals.

- Continuous improvement "mindset" with an ability to identify, influence, and implement better ways to do an activity or process.
- Some knowledge, skill, and experience using LEAN and Simplification techniques and tools.
The base pay range for this position is $99K – $140K. The specific pay offered may be influenced by a variety of factors, including the candidate's experience, education, and skill set. This position is also eligible for bonuses, such as a performance bonus/variable incentive compensation/equity. This position is expected to close on 11/5/25.
The company pays a geographic differential of 110%, 120%, or 130% of salary in certain areas.
