Emergency Department
for a
Clinical Nurse Educator.
The Nurse Educator functions as a staff educator to plan, coordinate, conduct and evaluate educational activities/programs; plan and coordinate implementation of evidence-based practice; monitor the level of care to standards; maintain unit level education records to meet TJC standards on orientation, training, and education. The incumbent will split their time, dedicating 50% to direct patient care responsibilities and 50% to indirect patient care as the nurse educator.

The successful hire in this position will:

  • Monitor and maintain the competency and education records of all Critical Care staff and participate in hospital committees that directly influence the quality of nursing care in the Emergency Department.
  • Actively contribute to the department organizational plan to ensure that this plan reflects state and national professional/health care trends as well as current standards of nursing practice and meeting regulatory standards.
  • Accept direct patient care assignments in proportion to other responsibilities including orientation and on-boarding of new staff and staff evaluations.
  • Exercise your clinical knowledge acquired from 2-5 years of experience in a Critical Care setting.
  • Display your assessment, evaluation, critical thinking and technical skills.
  • Exhibit your strong communication and teaching skills from previous experience in a formal and/or informal educational role.

The ideal candidate will have two to five years of experience in Critical Care nursing; possess expert knowledge of the electronic medical record for the creation of reports, auditing, and educational responsibilities.

Examples Of Duties
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Clinical Nurse duties direct and indirect as assigned.
  • Support nursing Education Department as assigned.
  • Assess, evaluate and direct nursing activities on an assigned shift to provide quality care to patients in compliance with prescribed standards and in conjunction with nursing management.
  • Resolve unusual or unique patient care problems or situations which require analytical, interpretative and constructive thinking.
  • Formulate and develop plans, procedures and program content designed to meet specifically identified training/educational needs of nursing staff.
  • Supervise and perform nursing assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation and documentation of patient care on the unit.
  • Work in conjunction with nursing management to coordinate adequate unit staffing for the assigned shift.
  • Participate with unit or clinic nursing management in interviewing, hiring, completing evaluations and performing disciplinary counseling of staff.
  • Supervise the work of professional and paraprofessional nursing staff.
  • Work with nursing management to identify staff development needs and to implement continuing education programs.
  • Assist nursing management in planning unit or clinic budget.
  • Interpret policies and procedures to nursing staff.
  • Participate in staff meetings.
  • Coordinate with ancillary support departments to coordinate total patient care.
  • Maintain and evaluate records.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
  • Conduct formal classroom instruction in the more difficult or complex areas of nursing technology requiring a knowledge and understanding of the scientific principles and theoretical concepts underlying specific nursing procedures or techniques.
  • Communicate research findings by publication and presentation at professional meetings.
  • Evaluate nursing research literature and own research findings for implementation and incorporation as appropriate, into patient care activities.
  • Serve as role model and resource person for staff and members of the interdisciplinary team.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Licensure/Certification:

  • Possession of a California license as a Registered Nurse.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Possession and maintenance of ACLS certification.
  • Possession and maintenance of PALS certification.
  • Possession and maintenance of Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) certification within three months of hire.

Education and Experience:

  • Associate Degree in Nursing with two years' clinical experience including one year in a clinical specialty area, or
  • Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing or a health related field with one year of clinical experience including six months in a clinical specialty area, or
  • Master's degree in Nursing.

Nurse Educator
: Must have knowledge of and verifiable experience in adult education curriculum development, program evaluation, and evidence-based and best practice implementation.

Knowledge of :

  • Advanced principles and practices in specialty areas.

  • Current nursing and related medical theory and skills necessary to administer nursing care within assigned clinical setting.

  • Basic statistics for reporting purposes.
  • Report writing.
  • Regulatory and accreditation requirements for assigned area.

  • Develop and present training and continuing education programs.
  • Design, evaluate, construct and modify research models; carry out research and present findings.

  • Identify problems or discrepancies and make suggestions for corrective actions.
  • Teach and orient staff.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationship with patients and staff members.
