Principal Test Equipment Design EngineerPosition Overview
The Principal Test Equipment Design Engineer is responsible for leading the design, development, and integration of advanced test systems and architectures in support of engineering and production programs. This position combines expertise in electrical design, software programming, and automation to deliver innovative, reliable test solutions for complex electronic systems across multiple disciplines, including analog, digital, RF, high-power, and embedded technologies.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the design, development, and deployment of complex automated and manual test systems for engineering and manufacturing environments.
- Collaborate with engineering, production, and operations teams to define test requirements and ensure seamless integration of test capabilities.
- Develop test hardware, software, and firmware architectures, incorporating both custom and commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) components.
- Oversee test solution development throughout the full lifecycle — from requirements definition through design verification and production deployment.
- Identify and mitigate risks, resolve technical challenges, and optimize test readiness across all project phases.
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to engineering teams, supporting professional growth and technical excellence.
- Prepare and deliver detailed project status updates and technical reports to leadership and stakeholders.
- Manage project cost, schedule, and performance commitments using Earned Value Management System (EVMS) and other project management tools.
- Support manufacturing operations, including on-site troubleshooting, debugging, and test system validation.
- Contribute to bid and proposal efforts by developing cost, schedule, and technical inputs for new projects.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM).
- Minimum of 8 years of relevant engineering experience, including 4+ years in test equipment design and development.
- Demonstrated experience leading technical teams and engineering projects.
- Proven background in test system architecture and integration for analog, digital, RF, and/or power systems.
- U.S. Citizenship and an active transferable U.S. government security clearance (Secret or higher).
- Ability to obtain an Interim Secret Clearance prior to start date.
Preferred Qualifications
- Proficiency with National Instruments tools such as TestStand, LabVIEW, and LabWindows/CVI.
- Experience with MS Project, Jira, Confluence, and EVMS for project tracking and reporting.
- Strong problem-solving, analytical, and decision-making skills.
- Hands-on experience with commercial test and measurement equipment (oscilloscopes, DMMs, network analyzers, power supplies, etc.).
- Familiarity with test automation, data acquisition systems, and production test processes.
