What You Will Do

Prototype Fabrication (PF) Division is seeking qualified Special Materials Machinists to produce components vital to the Lab's mission.

PF machinists manufacture parts and assemblies by programming, setting up, and operating precision machine tools. Our machines include manual and CNC mills, lathes, and EDMs. Machinists work from complex drawings, sketches, and CAD models. Special Materials Machinists utilize state-of-the-art safety protocols to cut materials with radiation, toxicity, or other hazardous characteristics.

The selected candidate will work in a team environment in both classified and unclassified work areas to provide fabrication services for a variety of customers both internal and external to Los Alamos National Laboratory. Our team is committed to a respectful and safe workplace for everyone.

Level 3: $71,200 - $112,900

Level 4: $85,900 - $154,600

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level you must be able to act as a lead for special projects and review activities for other machinists.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements

Technical Skills

  • Demonstrated experience in the setup and operation of CNC machine tools to produce parts with a high degree of difficulty and tight tolerances.
  • Demonstrated experience in machining workpiece materials with radiation, toxicity, or other hazardous characteristics.
  • Skilled in applied shop mathematics.
  • Demonstrated experience in the development of machining processes, including fixturing and tooling design and selection.
  • Experienced with creating and applying G&M code in the operation of CNC machines.
  • Ability to perform basic precision measurements on parts using inspection tools including calipers, micrometers, and verniers.

Communication, Teamwork, & Safety

  • Ability to communicate effectively and work successfully as part of a team
  • Follow guidelines for working safely in an industrial manufacturing environment.
  • Demonstrated record of dependability, reliability, and commitment to the long-term needs of the job duties and programmatic goals of the organization.

Additional Job Requirements for Level 4

  • Ability to review designs, plan cutting sequences, and advise on part manufacturability/cost/schedule
  • Ability to train and mentor other special materials machinists

Education/Experience at Level 3:

An associate's degree (AAS) in Machining Technologies or equivalent precision metalworking program and 4 years related experience; OR, 6 years prototype experience; OR Journeyperson qualification program and 4 years of experience.

Education/Experience at Level 4:

An associate's degree (AAS) in Machining Technologies or equivalent precision metalworking program and 6 years of experience; OR, 8 years prototype experience; OR Journeyperson qualification program and 6 years of experience.

Training/Certifications:

  • You must have the ability to acquire and maintain pertinent certifications, such as: Radiological Worker II; Beryllium Worker; forklift operator; crane operator (incidental or qualified); and others that may apply

Desired Qualifications

  • CAD/CAM experience, preferably Solidworks and MasterCam
    Demonstrated experience in the proper application and interpretation of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) to ASME Y14.5 standard

Work Location:Work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
