About the Role:

The Behavioral Support Aide plays a critical role in fostering a positive and supportive learning environment for students with behavioral challenges within an educational setting. This position involves working closely with students to implement individualized behavior intervention plans designed to promote social, emotional, and academic growth. The aide collaborates with teachers, counselors, and other educational professionals to monitor student progress and adjust strategies as needed to ensure effective support. By providing consistent guidance and encouragement, the Behavioral Support Aide helps students develop essential coping and interpersonal skills that contribute to their overall success. Ultimately, this role is vital in creating a safe, inclusive, and nurturing atmosphere that empowers students to thrive both inside and outside the classroom.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 60 Credits or an Associate's degree or higher in education, psychology, social work, or a related field.
  • Experience working with children or adolescents in an educational or behavioral support setting.
  • Basic understanding of behavior management principles and techniques.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, and families.
  • Clearances and background checks as required by state and local regulations.
  • Able to lift and manage behaviors up to 100 pounds

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience supporting students with special needs or behavioral disorders.
  • Training or certification in crisis intervention or behavior management strategies.
  • Familiarity with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and 504 plans.
  • Strong organizational and documentation skills.

Responsibilities:

  • Implement and reinforce individualized behavior intervention plans under the supervision of certified staff.
  • Observe and document student behavior, reporting progress and concerns to the educational team.
  • Assist students in developing positive social interactions and coping strategies during classroom and recreational activities.
  • Support classroom management by promoting a structured and respectful learning environment.
  • Collaborate with teachers, therapists, and families to ensure consistency in behavioral approaches and communication.
  • Participate in team meetings and training sessions to stay informed about best practices and student needs.
  • Respond calmly and effectively to behavioral incidents, using de-escalation techniques when necessary.

Skills:

The Behavioral Support Aide utilizes strong interpersonal and communication skills daily to build trusting relationships with students and collaborate effectively with educational staff. Active listening and observational skills are essential for accurately assessing student behavior and responding appropriately to their needs. Problem-solving and de-escalation techniques are applied to manage challenging situations calmly and safely. Organizational skills support the accurate documentation of behavioral data and the implementation of intervention plans. Additionally, adaptability and patience are crucial as the aide adjusts strategies to meet the evolving needs of each student in a dynamic educational environment.
