Job Overview

The Diesel Assistant Service Manager supports the Service Manager in overseeing daily operations of the diesel repair service department. This role includes assisting with supervision of the service team, coordinating repair schedules, maintaining service quality, and promoting customer satisfaction. The Diesel Assistant Service Manager will lead the department in the Service Manager's absence and collaborate closely with diesel technicians and customers to ensure efficient, high-quality service operations.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Assist in supervising and mentoring diesel service technicians and support staff.
  • Help schedule, allocate, and prioritize work to ensure efficient workflow and timely repair completion.
  • Support ongoing training and development initiatives to enhance staff performance and technical expertise in diesel systems.
  • Act as a secondary customer contact for diesel-related service inquiries, repair status updates, and issue resolution.
  • Assist in addressing and resolving customer complaints professionally and promptly.
  • Help maintain strong customer relationships to encourage repeat business and referrals.
  • Support overall service department operations, including managing workflow, diesel parts inventory, and equipment maintenance.
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards, environmental regulations, and company policies.
  • Aid in monitoring service budgets, including labor productivity, parts usage, and expense control.
  • Contribute to quality control processes to ensure diesel repairs meet company and industry standards.
  • Conduct inspections or audits of completed diesel work to verify quality and accuracy.
  • Assist in developing and enforcing best practices for diesel repair procedures and service operations.
  • Help prepare and maintain service reports, work orders, service logs, and performance data.
  • Analyze diesel service trends to identify process improvements and training needs.
  • Coordinate with other departments—such as sales, parts, and logistics—to optimize overall service efficiency.
  • Stay up-to-date on emerging diesel technologies, diagnostic tools, and best practices.
  • Provide technical guidance and troubleshooting support for complex diesel repair issues.
  • Ensure technicians follow proper diagnostic and testing procedures for diesel systems.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent; associate degree or technical certification in diesel technology, automotive technology, or mechanical engineering preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum of 3 years in diesel repair, with at least 2–3 years in a supervisory or leadership role.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and team development skills.
  • Excellent customer service and problem-solving abilities.
  • Proficient with diesel diagnostic software, tools, and testing equipment.
  • In-depth knowledge of diesel engine systems, emissions, and repair procedures.
  • Strong understanding of safety regulations and environmental standards in diesel maintenance.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced service environment.

Physical Requirements

  • Primarily office and shop environment.
  • Must be able to lift/carry 5 lbs frequently.
  • Must be able to lift/carry 25 lbs occasionally.
  • Must be able to lift/carry 50 lbs infrequently.
  • Periods of standing, walking, and exposure to diesel maintenance areas required.
  • Occasional desk work involving prolonged sitting and computer use.
