Location: San Mateo, CA (Hybrid*) will require onsite work, 2 days per week
Join our dynamic Global Privacy Legal Team as a transformational Legal Privacy Director, where your expertise in US and global data protection laws will shape the future of privacy in the world of digital entertainment. We're seeking a strategic leader who thrives with crafting innovative, business-friendly privacy solutions that will drive our global video games, digital entertainment, and technology initiatives forward. In this pivotal role, you'll be at the forefront of emerging technologies like interactive entertainment, content streaming, and virtual reality, advising product teams as they develop cutting-edge features for the PlayStationNetwork—serving over 100 million players worldwide. If you're passionate about privacy law and excited to influence the future of gaming, this is your chance to make a global impact
The candidate profile:
- This role requires a strategic focus across three equally weighted areas including people management and team leadership, providing legal and compliance advise across Americas and global privacy matters and programmatic and operational work to support the design, implementation and optimizing privacy processes.
- You love learning about the legal and policy issues emerging from information science and technology
- You enjoy delving into the details and understanding how data plays a role in nearly everything today
- You consider implementation as meaningful as conception and measure your own success by how well your work product enables an outstanding customer and player experience while embodying privacy by design and effectively mitigating risk
What you'll be doing:
- Lead a team of privacy legal experts advising the business across the Americas region counseling on data privacy and protection laws (including COPPA, CCPA, other state and federal privacy and consumer protection laws)
- Partner with the SIE Global Privacy Team to maintain and scale the SIE global privacy program
- Partner closely with SIE cross-functional teams (e.g., Product, Engineering, Information Security, IT, and Marketing), internal partners, and legal specialists to solve exciting privacy and data issues while providing exceptional entertainment experiences to our customers
- Lead SIE's response to new and evolving data protection and privacy laws, developments, breach notification laws and frameworks as well as other laws that impact the processing of personal information in the United States and provide practical and strategic advice to the business
- Lead on the design, development and implementation of data privacy policies, standards and processes in support of SIE business operations in Americas region
- Provide creative advice to balance the importance of protecting consumer privacy while enabling businesses to collect data and use it for strategic purposes
What we are looking for:
- At least 10 years of proven experience in managing US domestic and global privacy and related data protection compliance issues with a mix of private practice and in-house experience, including in a supervisory or managerial role
- CA bar membership preferred. At a minimum, the candidate must be qualified for and quickly acquire a Registered In-House Counsel status in California and the willingness to maintain that status during employment
- Experience creating and implementing privacy and related international and domestic data protection policies and compliance efforts and maintaining an agile privacy compliance program that responsibly uses and protects consumer, customer, and employee data
- Familiarity with social privacy issues (friends, family, identity), the characteristics of data/information and its lifecycle, data governance and emerging digital technologies, including AI technologies
- The ability to communicate sophisticated legal, technical and business concepts and requirements to non-legal professionals and interact with clients at all levels of the organization, including senior management
- Privacy certifications preferred (CIPP/US, CIPP/E)
As you will be working closely with global and local teams, international travel and calls involving late and early hours due to time zone differences may be required.
