JOB SUMMARY:

Summary

Under the direction of the Project Manager Animal Caretakers shall have demonstrated knowledge and skill in handling animals, especially rodents. They shall be able to recognize the appearance of abnormal animals and be able to maintain a clean environment for all animals.

Requirements

ACT I -1 year experience in a laboratory animal facility.

ACT II- Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician certification

Be able to lift 50 lbs and push or move equipment on wheels 100 lbs

Duties

  • Assure that procedures and practices involving the program of animal care are appropriate for the continued maintenance of AAALAC accreditation of the NIH facilities.
  • Adhere to security procedures and confidentiality requirements.
  • Assist, when requested, in experimental planning and logistics/scheduling of projects.
  • Ensure adherence of contract personnel to established Bldg 49 SOPs.
  • Participate in the ongoing employee training program, with special emphasis on safety and health training, safe work practices, and use of personal protective equipment.
  • Perform job tasks/duties in compliance with NIH policies, regulations, safety, and security procedures.
  • Perform work in compliance with applicable safety requirements.
  • Adhere to equipment sanitation and sterilization schedules.
  • Assure that records, log books, and other project records are appropriately maintained.
  • Comply with the QA/QC program.
  • Recommend changes in operational procedures that might increase the efficiency or effectiveness of work procedures or practices.
  • Observe and report any abnormalities in animals, equipment, or facilities to their floor supervisor or the On-Site Supervisor.
  • Perform husbandry, restraint, technical procedures, and environmental monitoring in accordance with established Bldg 49 SOPs.

__ Be present on floor at 6:30 am M-F 7:00 am S/S

__ Conduct AM. Animal health observations (pulling each cage)

__ Observations should include recording births

__ Complete Small Animal clinical Report (notify AHT of critical cases)

__ Check environmental status of each room (report deviations to TL)

__ Complete room sanitation log

__ Gather supplies for cage change

__ Change cages in accordance with established SOP

__ Inspect all cages prior to leaving room (ensure cages are empty of animals)

__ Label and place cages by elevator for inspection

__ Receive incoming animal as necessary

__ Lunch

__ Complete cage changing by 2:00 pm

__ Conduct room sanitation, stock supplies, and additional duties as assigned etc.

__ Wean cages as necessary and complete documentation

__ Conduct PM. animal health observations (using flashlight)

__ Notify AHT of any new cases

__ Complete sanitation log

__ Final prep of room prior to departure

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $ $22.00 per hour

Expected hours: No less than 40 per week

License/Certification:
