Small Animal Care Technician

Under the direction of the Small Animal Team Leader (SATL), the Animal Care Technician I/II (ACTI/II) will provide technical and husbandry services. Primary responsibilities include husbandry room activities, storage rooms, and common areas. ACT I/II will demonstrate the ability to interact with investigators and have experience with the type of research animals assigned to the area. Requirements ACT I shall have a high school diploma or equivalent, and 1 years’ experience in a laboratory animal facility. The ACT II shall train and be certified at the ALAT. Duties Perform animal husbandry and technical support services, monitoring their environment, and observing their health status daily. As directed by the Husbandry Manager or Team Leader. Schedule, perform, and document those activities necessary to accomplish task/work assignments. Establish liaison/communications with research personnel to facilitate responsiveness. Ensure special diets, or withholding food as requested/directed is carried out. Adhere to security procedures and confidentiality requirements. Assist, when requested, in the receipt of animal, supplies, feed, and bedding. Clean/sanitize room and equipment. Assure that adequate inventories of routinely used items are maintained. Identify potential problem areas with personnel, equipment, or facilities. Support/comply with the QA/QC program. Maintain a current knowledge of existing and proposed laws, regulations, and guidelines affecting the care and use of animals. Ensure animal health observations are completed by 8:30 am M-F prior to changing room cages, (9:00 am weekends). Ensure the change schedule is adhered to. Hours: Basic workweek of forty (40) hours per week with the start and the end of the workday dependent on the contract requirements of the workplace. Hours dictated by the institutional research schedule, weekend and holiday work may be required. Must be reliable in attendance to ensure animals receive an appropriate level of care. Potential for call-in to assist facility or animal health related emergencies. Physical Requirements: Climbing X Stooping X Kneeling X Reaching X Standing X Sitting X Walking X Pushing X Pulling X Talking X Hearing X Lifting/Moving Requirements: Light work; lifting to 50 pounds occasionally; repetitive lifting/manipulation of up to 10 pounds, applying up to 10 pounds constantly to move/roll objects. Environmental Conditions: Customarily performs animal care, research management and administration duties in an environmentally controlled work area. However, technical and management duties may be performed in an animal care vivarium, barrier facility, surgical or test procedure laboratory, animal housing/bedding cleaning and processing areas. Work may require the use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) in these facilities. Laboratory environment and/or animal care work areas may be prone to hot and humid conditions, and subject to objectionable odors, aerosols, dust, animal dander, and noise.
