Summary

Under the direction of the Principal Investigator, Research Ophthalmic Technicians provide support to assigned clinical trials. Research Ophthalmic Technicians are able to perform many ophthalmic diagnostic tests and assessments on study participants in accordance with site standard operating procedures and regulatory guidelines.

Job Duties

Research Ophthalmic Technicians assist with the following tests/assessments within an ophthalmology practice in relation to study participants, including but not limited to the following:

  • Schedule study patients for study visits
  • Operate various ophthalmic diagnostic devices
  • Obtain a thorough medical history from the patient
  • Performing ophthalmic diagnostic testing, such as:
  • Visual acuity testing
  • Lensometry
  • Tonometry
  • Manifest refraction (including loose lens trial frame refraction)
  • Optical coherence tomography (OCT)
  • Static and kinetic visual fields
  • Corneal topography
  • Endothelial cell count
  • Microperimetry
  • Full-field stimulus test (FST)
  • Electroretinography (ERG)
  • F/A

Ophthalmic technicians need to also perform the following:

  • Basic clinical/ophthalmic knowledge and understanding of medical terminology
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Good organizational and time management skills and strong attention to detail, with ability to handle multiple tasks efficiently and effectively
  • Ability to work in a team or independently, as required
  • Well-developed critical thinking skills
  • Proficient computer skills with good knowledge of MS Office and Excel
  • Ability to extract pertinent information from all study documents, electronic study data systems, and dashboards
  • Follows International Conference on Harmonization (ICH)/Good Clinical Practice (GCP) guidelines
  • Seeks opportunities to expand learning beyond baseline competencies with a focus on continual development
  • Performs other job related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Two years of relevant experience.
  • Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA), Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT), Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technician (COMT).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with fluorescein angiography (FA) strongly preferred.
