UX Designer – Emerging Interfaces

Remote, Oregon, United States THE BLANK & CO AGENCY INC Full time

About Blank & Co.

Blank & Co. is a digital-experience agency specialising in Shopify development, UX/UI design, branding and digital marketing. We partner with brands to elevate customer experience and accelerate brand growth. As part of our vision to lead in future-facing interfaces, we are building a team that's fluent not just in classic web UI, but in "no UI", spatial UI, voice/conversational interfaces, AR/VR and other next-gen interaction patterns.

Role Purpose

We're looking for a UX Designer who re-imagines how people interact with digital experiences beyond clicks and screens. The ideal candidate can design intuitive, immersive, and context-aware experiences that feel natural in environments where the UI fades away (no UI) or surfaces in spatial, 3D or mixed-reality contexts. You'll work with cross-functional teams (strategy, design, development, branding) to conceive, prototype and deliver bold experience designs for clients looking to lead rather than follow.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead research and discovery for immersive/no-UI/spatial-UI experiences: stakeholder workshops, user interviews, contextual inquiry, journey mapping.
  • Ideate interaction models when "screen" is not the only (or primary) interface: interfaces driven by voice, gesture, location, environment, sensors, AR/VR, spatial mediation.
  • Create wireframes, flows, storyboards, prototypes (2D, 3D, mixed) showing how users move through the experience in space (physical/virtual) as well as in time.
  • Collaborate with developers, XR/AR engineers, product owners and branding teams to ensure your designs scale from concept to production.
  • Maintain and evolve design systems that support non-traditional UI elements: voice components, ambient interfaces, spatial anchors, "zero UI" behaviours.
  • Conduct usability and heuristic testing in unconventional contexts (e.g., VR headset, mobile sensor environment, voice only) and iterate designs accordingly.
  • Stay ahead of UI/UX trends: no-UI, spatial computing, ambient interfaces, voice/AI pipelines, mixed-reality interaction—advocate for what these mean for our clients and workflows.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to junior designers on next-gen interface paradigms, accessibility in immersive contexts, and inclusive design for ambient/hidden UI.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • 4+ years of UX or interaction design experience (agency or product) with a demonstrable portfolio of projects in advanced interaction paradigms (e.g., voice-first, gesture, AR/VR, spatial UI).
  • Strong proficiency with UX deliverables: research plans, personas, journey maps, wireframes, interactive prototypes (2D/3D).
  • Experience with prototyping tools suited to immersive/spatial contexts (for example: Unity, Unreal Engine, ARKit/ARCore, WebXR, —but not strictly required).
  • Experience designing for ambient/zero UI concepts: interfaces that don't rely solely on screen visuals but on context, sensors, environment, voice & gesture.
  • Excellent visual design sensibility and interaction design skills: you understand micro-motion, spatial transitions, and the nuances of immersive UX.
  • Ability to work productively in cross-disciplinary teams (designers, engineers, product, brand) and to communicate complex ideas clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Passion for exploring emerging technologies, staying current on interaction paradigms, and pushing the boundaries of "what's possible" in UX.
  • Strong communication skills, self-motivation, proactive mindset; ability to work in a dynamic agency environment and adapt to varied client contexts.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience designing for spatial UI / mixed reality / 3D environments / game engines.
  • Familiarity with zero-UI design principles (ambient, hidden, context-aware interfaces) and their implications for usability, accessibility and performance.
  • Experience working with voice-first or conversational UI systems (Alexa, Google Assistant, chatbots) in a UX design capacity.
  • Knowledge of accessibility standards specifically for AR/VR and voice interfaces.
  • Experience designing or working within design systems for complex UI ecosystems.

What We Offer

  • Opportunity to work on forward-looking client projects (brands embracing future-tech UX) and to define new paradigms in user experience.
  • Collaborative, design-led agency culture with emphasis on creativity, experimentation and pushing boundaries.
  • Remote-friendly with flexibility, but occasional on-site meetings in Ojai/Los Angeles as needed.
  • Competitive salary (or contract rate) + benefits (if full-time) + professional development budget for training in XR, spatial UX, etc.
  • A chance to shape and grow the "future technologies" UX discipline within our agency — you'll be a early member of this practice.

Application Instructions

Please submit:

  • Your résumé / LinkedIn profile
  • A digital portfolio – especially highlighting any work in conversational UI, ambient or zero-UI, spatial or immersive UX.

Blank & Co. is an equal-opportunity employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all team members.
