Position Description

The House Manager is the onsite coordinator for events Portland Center Stage (PCS) at The Armory, and serves as an important liaison to the public and to PCS volunteers. The House Manager must have a welcoming presence and be able to confidently manage a crowded lobby on a firm schedule. This position is part-time and seasonal–most hours follow the PCS season of productions, with occasional shifts covering venue rentals, residencies, and special events.  

Essential Responsibilities
  • Coordinate and ensure safe, smooth operation of Front of House activities and events including performances in both the Main Stage and Studio Theater and special events held in the lobby as scheduled.
  • Coordinate stuffing and placement of appropriate number of programs at each theater entrance. 
  • Assign volunteer staff to positions and conduct usher briefings prior to each performance.  
  • Prepare Front of House manager's reports nightly including facility notes and incident reports.
  • Report any safety concerns in the lobby or theater spaces to the Lead House Manager or Operations staff on duty.
  • Maintain knowledge of emergency and evacuation procedures.
  • Resolve event problems, field complaints, deal with unruly patrons or such individuals not associated with the event.
  • Support accommodations for patrons with disabilities. 
  • Provide ongoing training and recognition for volunteers.
  • Learn and uphold the PCS IDEA Community Guidelines as relates to all interactions within the broader PCS community.
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
  • Customer service experience; previous House Managing experience preferred.
  • First Aid and CPR training, or willingness to become certified upon hire. 
  • Commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and access
  • Passion for the arts, particularly theater, a plus.
Skills & Knowledge
  • Excellent customer service skills, interpersonal skills, even temperament, ability to supervise volunteers effectively.
  • Quick problem solving abilities, initiative, multi-tasking and organization in challenging situations are essential. 
  • Previous experience with scheduling and coordinating volunteers.
  • Knowledge of Excel, Microsoft Word and ability to learn new software quickly.
  • Be focused, flexible and have great attention to detail. 
  • Ability to build effective working relationships with co-workers.
  • Ticketing experience preferred.

Working Conditions and hours

  • This is a seasonal, part time position, working roughly 10 hours per week but with week-to-week variation possible.
  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs and to remain on feet for long periods of time.
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and weekday matinees.
  • Willing to work long hours and split shifts when necessary.

Salary & Benefits 

  • $18/hr.
  • This position is part-time, seasonal and non-exempt.
