Excavation Equipment Operator (Large Excavators)

This position will primarily involve the operation of full-size excavators and heavy equipment for deep trenching, duct bank installation, and large-scale utility work. The operator will be responsible for safe, efficient excavation around existing utilities and the proper use of trench boxes, shoring systems, and lifting equipment. The ideal candidate demonstrates exceptional skill with heavy machinery, situational awareness in confined and complex work zones, and a strong sense of teamwork and safety.

ESSENTIAL CAPABILITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

· Operation of full-size excavators (20–40 ton class) and other heavy equipment

· Excavation and backfilling for deep utility and large-diameter conduit installation

· Safe setup and use of trench boxes, shoring, and rigging/lifting systems

· Reading and understanding plans, utility locates, and worksite layouts

· Safe excavation around live utilities and adherence to all OSHA trench safety standards

· Coordination with foreman, laborers, and inspectors to maintain schedule and production

· Transporting materials and equipment using company trucks/trailers as needed

· Assisting crew with site prep, hand digging, and general labor tasks when required

· Ensuring work conforms to client requirements and CSU quality standards

· Adhering to all CSU and client safety protocols

· Maintaining clean and organized work areas and equipment

PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK ENVIRONMENT

· Ability to hear, understand, and respond to verbal requests made in person and over the radio

· Ability to operate heavy equipment and motor vehicles safely

· Standing, walking, and climbing throughout the day

· Ability to stoop, bend, stretch, and lift up to 50 pounds regularly

· Ability to work in variable weather and ground conditions year-round

QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES

· Current, valid driver's license required

· CDL Class A with air brakes and tanker endorsement preferred (or willingness to obtain)

· Minimum 2+ years of experience operating full-size excavators in utility or civil excavation environments

· Demonstrated proficiency with trench boxes, deep cuts, and confined work areas

· Familiarity with locates, reading prints, and maintaining safe separation from utilities

· Strong understanding of jobsite safety and OSHA trench safety standards

· Experience with backhoes, loaders, and other related equipment is a plus

· Ability to work independently and as part of a crew with a focus on production and quality
