Job Description

The City of Binghamton is seeking a skilled Electrician / Signal Electrician to join our Department of Public Works. This civil service position offers a hands-on opportunity to maintain and repair essential electrical systems, including traffic signals, streetlights, and City-owned buildings and facilities.

As part of our team, you will work independently or in small groups to plan and complete projects. Leadership opportunities are available for supervising small crews and managing maintenance and capital projects.

Responsibilities

  • Install, maintain, repair, and replace electrical fixtures, cabinets, streetlights, and traffic signals.
  • Troubleshoot and repair circuit breakers, controls, and regulators.
  • Order parts, track time and materials, and maintain accurate work records.
  • Plan and oversee maintenance and capital projects for street lighting and traffic signal systems.
  • Operate motor equipment to transport tools and parts.
  • Document work using CarteGraph software.
  • Supervise and lead small work crews as needed.

Qualifications

  • Education & Experience:
  • High School Diploma/GED and completion of a five-year apprenticeship or equivalent trade school program, plus 5 years field experience (Journeyman, Lineman, or Electrician), including 2 years supervisory experience; OR
  • Associate's Degree in Electrical Technology plus 5 years field experience and 2 years supervisory experience; OR
  • Equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Licensing:
  • Journeyman Electrician license in the City of Binghamton (or ability to obtain within probationary period).
  • Valid NYS Class D Driver's License (must maintain throughout employment).
  • Skills & Abilities:
  • Knowledge of electrical tools, safety practices, and trade terminology.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Competence with personal computers and common office software (Word, Excel, CarteGraph).
  • Physical ability to perform essential duties.
