Process Development Engineer

Job Overview
The Process Development Engineer works with our engineering team to assist in developing and optimizing processes that enable the design, integration, and deployment of custom automation equipment and industrial systems. This role blends technical problem-solving, process design, and hands-on engineering to support clients in achieving manufacturing efficiency, scalability, and quality improvements. There is heavy emphasis on technical documentation, including user requirements, machine manuals, standard operating procedures, test protocols, and design specifications.
Duties
- Partner with clients to understand manufacturing challenges and define process requirements for custom automation solutions.
- Design, develop, and validate processes that integrate mechanical, electrical, control, and machine vision systems into automated machinery.
- Develop and perform measurement system testing on equipment, including machine vision systems and other measurement tools used in automated equipment.
- Support the scale-up and deployment of new manufacturing processes, from prototyping to production-ready solutions.
- Conduct feasibility studies, risk assessments, and process simulations to guide equipment design and process optimization.
- Generate and maintain process documentation, test requirements, technical manuals, and technical reports using modern engineering tools, including AI tools such as ChatGPT
- Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and software engineers to ensure seamless machine integration.
- Identify opportunities for continuous improvement in throughput, reliability, safety, and cost-effectiveness.
- Plan and execute qualification testing for automation systems to ensure reliability, functionality, safety, software quality, and compliance with requirements.
Requirements
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, or related field.
- Strong knowledge of process design, industrial automation systems, and system integration.
- Hands-on experience with manufacturing equipment, automation controls, or custom machine development.
- Proficiency with CAD tools (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD) and data analysis/statistical tools such as SAS-JMP or Minitab.
- Strong technical writing and documentation skills, with the ability to leverage AI tools such as ChatGPT to produce clear and professional engineering documents.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to work directly with clients and cross-functional teams.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with machine vision systems (e.g., camera integration, lighting design, image processing, and inspection algorithms).
- Experience with software qualification testing, validation protocols, and troubleshooting of automation software.
- Familiarity with PLCs, robotics, motion systems, or other automation technologies.
- Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, or other continuous improvement methodologies.
- Experience with safety standards, compliance requirements, and risk analysis in industrial environments.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and deliver solutions on time and within budget.
Travel
- 10% travel is required. Mostly domestic but international is a possibility
- Travel expenses are reimbursed
