The Opportunity: Early Childhood Mental Health (ECMH) Peer Counselor for Children 0-5 YearsThe ECMH Peer Counselor will provide short-term, one-on-one sessions and/or check-ins, Case management services, psychoeducational workshops and group skill-based support to children and their guardians in a community-based setting. This is a meaningful opportunity for individuals with lived experience to promote wellness and resilience through psychoeducation, emotional support, and modeling of coping strategies.
Peer Counseling Position must perform all essential job functions and duties as required by ECMH Director and Clinical Supervisor. These job duties may include, but are not limited to, providing skill based counseling to adults and children and documenting counseling services(progress notes/tracker), collaborating with partner staff and parents, and attending meetings with ECMH Director. Peer Counselor must attend one hour a week of supervision. Peer counselors must be on-site for Individual and/or group counseling sessions.
Peer Counselors are not clinical providers. Their work is non-diagnostic and does not include therapy. This role is ideal for individuals interested in becoming certified Peer Support Specialists in California and/or entering the mental health field.
This position reports directly to the ECMH Director and their Clinical Supervisor
Scope of Practice & Role Clarification
Job Responsibilities:
- Provide supportive peer counseling to parents and caregivers of children aged 0–5.
- Offer case management and resource navigation to families, connecting them to internal and external services.
- Support families currently receiving Child-Parent Psychotherapy (CPP) services, in collaboration with clinical providers.
- Collaborate with Clinicians to provide support for families
- Engage with families participating in One Life's Monday Market, providing relational support and referral pathways to mental health services as needed with an emphasis on CPP cases.
- Lead or co-facilitate parent-child groups, promoting secure attachment and early developmental growth.
- Lead Weekly Parent Support Groups
- Assist in crisis management situations in collaboration with licensed clinical staff.
- Table at events connect families to therapeutic services at OLC
- Work with ECMH Consultants to connect families from 9 area preschools to OLC for MH services
- Work With Referral Coordinator to connect families to Insurance to gain MH Services.
- Attend weekly clinical supervision, monthly staff meetings, and participate in ongoing trainings relevant to early childhood development and peer support.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation and case notes in accordance with agency standards
- Awareness and practice of cultural humility.
- Adhere to all mental health legal and ethical mandates and guidelines in the execution of duties, including timely completion of charting, billing, report preparation.
- Provided skill based group counseling at partner sites for kids and/or adults who need skill based interventions.
- Distribute First 5 Materials as needed
- Attend monthly All Staff meetings last Tuesday of each month 8:30am to 9:00am via zoom unless otherwise noted.
- Report to Clinical Supervisor for any crisis support (APS, CPS, etc.) and follow up with Community Partnerships Coordinator and Program Director (please see crisis protocol google doc for steps to take)
Data Tracking
- Track all interactions using Trackers (sessions, client data etc.)
- Track families in the Program with First 5 data base system
- Complete all progress notes within 24 hours
Please note: Peer counselors will not diagnose or use treatment plans

Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $ $31.00 per hour
Expected hours: 12 – 20 per week
