LOCATION:

Thurston County - Olympia,Washington

SALARY:

(The above reflects the full salary range, starting salary based on the successful candidate's experience and qualifications and will likely be below the top of the range.)

Our ideal candidate has a driving passion for the work, brings humility to their job and interactions, and understands their impact on others. They see the needs and goals of our Pages and take them into account while achieving their objectives and adjust their approach and expectations accordingly. They are nimble and adaptive and can have courageous conversations when needed. They understand the Page Program is often the first exposure to state government for youth and this experience positively impacts their relationship with civic engagement into adulthood.

About the Washington State Legislature:

The Washington State Legislature is a bicameral body comprised of the Senate and the House of Representatives. The Legislature meets annually on the second Monday in January in the Capitol Building in Olympia. Regular legislative sessions take place January through March in even-numbered years and January through April in odd-numbered years. Special legislative sessions occur as needed.

Our workplace is on the beautiful Capitol Campus in Olympia. The 486-acre campus includes the Legislative Building and other historic structures, as well as popular parks and trails with views of Capitol Lake, Budd Inlet, and the Olympic Mountains.

About the Page Program:

During each week of the legislative session approximately 50 students, ages 14 to 16, from across Washington serve as House and Senate Pages and participate in state government. Youth submit applications and are selected by the Senator or Representative from their legislative district. The typical day of a page is divided between work on the House and Senate floor, distributing materials throughout the Capitol Campus, supporting member offices, and presenting the colors at the opening of the day's session.

Pages also spend time each day attending Page School, which supplements the hands- on experience while strengthening the page's understanding of the legislative process and state government. To provide the best experience possible to all learners, the Page School aims to employ two certificated teachers and maintains class sizes below fifteen. Pages attend the school for two hours each day in a mixed class setting with House and Senate Pages. Using activities, technology, and guest speakers, the group endeavors down a path of learning focused on the three branches of government, the lawmaking process, and the importance of civil discourse. Find out more about the program by visiting here.
