DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS The Library Assistant I- PT is responsible for performing a wide variety of simple manual and clerical tasks in a library facility. Responsibilities include using the N.R.E web gateway to search for materials and coordinating their delivery. Additionally, assistance is provided to patrons with basic computer skills, and an English/Spanish translation service is offered. Utilizes various aspects of cataloging, from data input to material organization. This includes receiving and sorting donated items, making edits, relabeling, and handling material withdrawals. Furthermore, active participation is undertaken in children's programming, event promotion, and patron interaction. An employee in this class requires no previous training or special knowledge of library routine, other than that received on the job. This class works under the supervision of a Library Associate or Librarian who reviews work in progress and upon completion. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES This list is not intended to be construed as an exhaustive list of all functions, responsibilities, skills, and abilities. Additional functions and requirements may be assigned by supervisors as deemed appropriate. - Sorts, shelves, and files various library material accurately according to library classification systems (alphabetic, numeric, and alphanumeric). - Reads shelves for accuracy and re-shelves misplaced items. - Unpacks and packs boxes of books returned from or to be returned to other library agencies. - Retrieves library materials from public and non-public stack areas for library staff or library users. - Prepares library materials for circulation by attaching labels, pockets, and plastic jackets. - Boxes or bundles forms, tapes, or other material for distribution or mailing. - Sorts, separates, arranges, files or distributes incoming mail, products or material. - Operates a cash register and other cash handling duties. - Observes all safety regulations and communicates potential safety hazards. - Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service. - Provides in-person, phone, and electronic (email, chat) customer service, assisting the public with technology, internet-related inquiries, and general questions. - Performs various tasks related to library materials, including shifting to create space for new items, relabeling materials, cataloging, clearing withdrawn materials, fulfilling patron requests, and organizing donated materials. - Engages in photography, photo editing, videography, video editing using software like Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Premiere Pro, and Adobe Illustrator. - Assists other library departments and participate in city events and food distributions, attending meetings related to library events and contributing ideas for future initiatives. - Contributes to public relations, marketing efforts, graphic design, website management, content creation, outreach activities, and the creation and printing of flyers, brochures, and pamphlets. - Catalogs books, media, and other materials into the library's collection. - Receives and sorts donated materials from patrons and organizations, organizing them for sale in the library's Book Store. - Searches for lost or missing materials on the library floor, send requests to librarians for review, and create suggestion/replacement lists for materials to be considered for purchase. - Assists in training new staff, work students, volunteers, and Workforce members. Create and manage schedules for the department. - Coordinates interlibrary loans to ensure access to a wider range of materials for patrons. - Serves as a Safety Coordinator, providing training as needed to maintain a secure environment. - Acts as an English/Spanish translator, as needed. - Provides reference assistance to library users. - Assists in the management of study room reservations. - Handles non-fiction materials. - Contributes to the maintenance of the library facility. - Designs monthly calendars for library events and activities. - Assists with children's programming and activities. - Builds and maintains positive relationships with library patrons to enhance their experience. - Oversees part-timers which are two total and students and volunteers when applicable. Additional Requirements: - Available to work nights and weekends on a rotational basis. - Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon assignment. SUPERVISION RECEIVED & EXERCISED - General supervision is received from a Librarian. - Some positions may receive functional supervision from a Library Associate. - This position has no supervisory responsibilities. QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES Knowledge of: - Principles and practices of customer service. - The alphabet and correct spelling of the English language. Ability to: - Understand and follow oral and written instructions. - Work cooperatively with other City employees and the general public. - Sort and file alphabetically and numerically. - Learn job-related material primarily through oral instruction and observation, which takes place mainly in an on-the-job setting. - Work safely without presenting a direct threat to the incumbent or others. - Work well with children. Education & Experience: - High School Diploma orequivalent; or six (6) months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Licenses, Certificates & Registrations: - Valid Texas Driver's License. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS The employee is frequently required to make continuous or repetitive arm-hand movements, such as checking in books and operating a computer keyboard; bend or stoop repeatedly over time; move light objects (less than 20 pounds) short distances; and remain in a standing position for extended periods of time. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. WORKING CONDITIONS The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet. SAFETY SENSITIVITY This position is not classified as a safety-sensitive position.-
