Department: Physics
General Statement of Job

The Lab Coordinator coordinates science laboratory courses for Astronomy, Engineering, Geology, Physical Science, and Physics district wide. Responsible for and maintains safety in the labs according to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and Global Harmonized System (GHS) guidelines. Supervises lab specialists and part-time staff district-wide.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

  • Coordinates physical science laboratory courses for Astronomy, Engineering, Geology, Physical Science, and Physics in all college campuses and centers and dual enrollment high school partners.
  • Manages and coordinates laboratory inventory reviews, and lab inspections of our dual credit partnering districts.
  • Manages the physical science labs in compliance with federal, state, and local laws.
  • Responsible for ensuring EPA and GHS compliance and training.
  • Collaborates with the other division Lab Coordinators, project managers, and Environmental Health Safety (EHS) office personnel to establish, maintain, and revise the chemical hygiene plan (CHP) annually.
  • Develops and provides training in operating, maintaining, and safety of lab equipment to lab personnel.
  • Ensures training aids are available in labs.
  • Oversees and performs alongside the lab specialists, preparatory work for the physical science laboratories, including reagent preparation, and preparing carts with materials for lab.
  • Responsible for reporting of reagent completeness in all physical science labs district-wide.
  • Coordinates with the department chair to provide assistance throughout the physical science and engineering departments for the laboratory requirements of all faculty.
  • Assists lab specialists and instructors during regularly scheduled labs.
  • Administers oversight of laboratory inventory and equipment.
  • Orders, receives, issues, and stores materials, parts, and supplies.
  • Assists with the review of bids on materials and equipment purchases, as needed.
  • Performs routine repairs on equipment, and notifies proper personnel for warranty maintenance and major non-warranty repairs.
  • Oversees and assists lab specialists in preparing flammable, acidic - alkaline, or corrosive liquids.
  • Supervises and executes the management of waste collection and storage in the labs and schedules for waste pickup and disposal in compliance with federal, state, and local laws.
  • Reviews waste disposal manifests, waste stream logs, weekly waste inspection log, and ensures paperwork is submitted to safety office.
  • Coordinates and develops workshops for special and community events.
  • Recommends laboratory equipment and researches potential new laboratory experiments, as needed or as requested by faculty.
  • Prepares periodic and special reports including inventory reports and Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
  • Evaluates and assess all procedural outcomes, implements changes and interventions as necessary to achieve project outcomes.
  • Supervises lab specialists and part-time staff district-wide.
  • Cross-trains lab specialists and part-time staff in the physical science labs (Astronomy, Engineering, Geology, Physical Science and Physics), as needed.
  • Serves as Campus Security Authority.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Physics or related field required; Master's Degree preferred.
  • At least three (3) years of work experience in a science lab setting required.
  • Experience in leadership or managerial roles in academic, professional, or organizational settings, preferred.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong background in computers and office automation, including word processing, spreadsheets, database, Excel, PowerPoint and knowledge of the Windows environment.
  • Knowledge of the science field, preferably Chemistry or Physics.
  • Familiarity of a science laboratory, including safety and precautions.
  • Knowledge of Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and Global Harmonized System (GHS) guidelines.
  • Ability to prioritize, organize and complete multiple tasks, within stated deadlines.
  • Ability to adapt to constant change and periods of fast-paced, high-intensity work situations.
  • Ability to work independently as well as a team player within department and with others.
  • Ability to work evenings and/or weekends as needed; willing to travel throughout the college district using own means of reliable transportation.
  • Demonstrated commitment to achieving the vision and mission of South Texas College.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of students or employees of organization.

  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Physical Requirements
