Job Summary:

We are seeking a reliable and hardworking Shop Assistant to support the day-to-day operations of our centerless grinding shop. The successful candidate will be responsible for moving heavy metal bars, operating a forklift, constructing wooden storage boxes, and maintaining the overall cleanliness and organization of the shop. This is an entry-level position with opportunities to grow within the company.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Material Handling: Safely move and transport heavy metal bars to and from different areas of the shop or load them on/off trucks.
  • Forklift Operation: Operate a forklift to load, unload, and move materials, ensuring safe and efficient handling of inventory.
  • Wooden Box Construction: Build and assemble sturdy wooden boxes for storing metal bars and other materials. Use tools such as hammers, nail guns, saws, and drills.
  • Shop Upkeep: Assist with general housekeeping tasks, including sweeping, organizing tools, maintaining equipment, and ensuring the shop is clean, safe, and orderly.
  • Inventory Support: Assist with inventory tracking, including labeling and storing materials properly for easy access.
  • Safety Compliance: Follow all safety guidelines and wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times while on the job.
  • Assist in Machine Shop Operations: Provide support to machine operators and other team members as needed, including delivering materials or tools and aiding in machine set-up.

Qualifications:

  • Experience: Previous experience in a machine shop, warehouse, or manufacturing environment is preferred but not required.
  • Physical Ability: Must be able to lift heavy materials (up to [specific weight limit]) and perform physically demanding tasks, including bending, lifting, and standing for long periods.
  • Basic Carpentry Skills: Experience or willingness to learn how to use basic woodworking tools to build wooden boxes.
  • Attention to Detail: Ability to follow instructions, maintain accurate records, and ensure materials are handled and stored properly.
  • Safety Awareness: Strong commitment to maintaining a clean, organized, and safe working environment.
  • Team Player: Ability to work well with others and take direction from supervisors.

Work Environment:

  • Fast-paced, physically demanding machine shop environment.
  • Requires standing, lifting, bending, and operating machinery and tools.
  • Must be able to work in a non-climate-controlled environment, which may be noisy or dusty at times.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Hourly wage: $13
