Pharmacy Technician

Summary/Objective

Prepares medications for patients under direction of physician or physician assistant and assists the clinic in patient care and other clinic related activities.

Essential Functions

• Provides prompt and courteous service to external and internal customers of the pharmacy and clinical department.
• Assists in maintaining an accurate medication profile for each patient receiving medication within the department.
• Assists with management of drug stock including, but not limited to, shelving new drug stock (with proper rotation of items), arranging stock and organizing storage areas, documenting the need for ordering items, and maintaining proper documentation and record keeping.
• Completes required training in a satisfactory manner.
• Delivers medications to patient care areas within appropriate time frames.
• Assists in ensuring that drug storage locations are maintained in an appropriate manner.
• Ensures that drug items are appropriately billed to various insurances or patients.
• Assists in insuring that pharmacy inventory is maintained at appropriate levels in a cost-conscious manner to promote availability of items included in the Formulary.
• Processes transfers according to established departmental procedures.
• Assures that expired medications are removed from the pharmacy inventory and disposed of properly.
• Assists in maintaining the cleanliness and order of the pharmacy department.
• Utilizes appropriate safety and infection control practices.
• Maintains confidentiality regarding patients and all aspects of care.
• Participates in educational activities, location meetings, and company training.
• Maintains skills as demonstrated through competency testing.
• Assists in training and orienting new personnel or students to the departmental services and programs.
• Other duties as assigned.

Work Environment

This job operates in a clinical environment. This role is exposed to blood borne pathogens, toxic chemicals, electrical and mechanical hazards, bio-contaminated waste, and unpleasant elements. This role also routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

Physical Demands

Employee is regularly required to sit, talk or hear. Must be proficient in the English language, both verbally and written. The employee is also required to perform the following: standing, walking, using hands to finger handle or feel, bending, stooping, lifting up to 20# frequently and 40# occasionally, climb or balance, kneel, crouch or crawl. Requires ability to perform close vision, peripheral vision, ability to adjust focus and spend up to 8 hrs in front of a computer.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work will vary between the hours of Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Travel

While the Pharmacy Technician will be working out of one clinic, they may need to travel between clinics to help with coverage or inventory transfers as needed.

Education and Experience

• High school graduation or GED or one year of related experience and/or training or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Certification as a Pharmacy Technician preferred.
