Our Academic Coordinator program is a great way to interact with youth and provide them with extra support and tools they may not have otherwise. BGCS is known for its passionate team, flexible scheduling, and devotion to providing new experiences and opportunities for the youth in our community.
Position Summary:
Under the supervision of the Unit Director, the Academic Coordinator is responsible for supporting Club members as they develop relevant skills and better understand the school curriculum outside the classroom. The Academic Coordinator promotes the Boys & Girls Club's core area of Academic Success. This position will work closely with Club members, one-on-one and in small groups, to assist in the bridging of academic gaps, particularly in the areas of reading and math and will also facilitate learning in a classroom setting as support for Youth Development Professionals.
Key Qualifications & Responsibilities:
- Work closely with the school district to ensure proper tracking of students' grades and progress, meet Club member benchmarks throughout the school year related to attendance, behavior, and academic performance.
- Possess strong verbal and written communication skills to clearly explain challenging concepts, provide instructions, and deliver feedback.
- Skillfully plan programs and activities that offer disguised learning opportunities to members.
- Masterfully motivate and encourage students to improve their academic performance using effective goal-setting strategies.
- Develop and implement academic-focused program plans and high-yield learning opportunities.
- Utilize creativity and adaptability to effectively personalize learning approaches for individual students.
- Demonstrate patience, empowerment, and compassion for students as they develop skills and improve their academic performance.
- Facilitate social-emotional learning techniques to de-escalate behavior and support positive Club climate.
- Keep accurate records of activity participation and member progress.
- Assume other duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements
Percentage of Work Spent on Activity: 0-24%, 25-49%, 50-74%, 75-100%
- Seeing: (75-100%) Must be able to see well enough to see computer and read documents and reports. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Must have 20/20 vision (with or without correction).
- Hearing: (50-74%) Must be able to hear well enough to effectively communicate with members, coworkers and guests.
- Sitting: (50-74%) Must be able to sit for periods of time.
- Standing/Walking: (50-74%) Must have the ability to move about the work site.
- Climbing/Stooping/Kneeling: (25-49%) Must be able to stoop or kneel to interact with members.
- Lifting/Pulling/Pushing: (0-24%) Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs.
- Grasping/Feeling: (75-100%) Must be able to grasp office and instructional equipment used in the classroom.
Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is often in a clean, non-smoking, heated and cooled office environment. The employee will also frequently be indoors, but may also be outdoors with exposure to dust, pollen, and outside temperature and weather extremes associated with the region. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.
