Jupiter Power is an energy infrastructure company focused on the development, construction, and operation of battery energy storage (BES) assets in wholesale electricity markets. Formed in 2017, the company is a leader in energy storage deployment, utilizing its proprietary dispatch optimization applications to support both merchant and contracted structures. Backed by BlackRock's Diversified Infrastructure business, Jupiter Power has a strategic and established portfolio of 2,195MWh of utility-scale energy storage projects operating or in construction in the U.S., with a leading pipeline of over 10,500 MW in active development.
To support its expanding portfolio, Jupiter Power is seeking a DA Trader who will be responsible for supporting Jupiter's activities to optimize the daily trading and dispatch of its battery energy storage systems (BESS) in power markets, with an initial concentration in ERCOT. Regular duties include (i) determining and executing daily trading positions in accordance with BESS dispatch capabilities, including buy/sell commitments for real-time, day ahead, and ancillary services markets, in conjunction with various proprietary and third party software and forecasts, (ii) assisting with real time asset optimization including state of charge management, (iii) implementing market positions and timely submitting plans and associated adjustments, and (iv) coordinating market activities with the company's risk management policies and procedures. Primary ongoing responsibility is to capture learnings from operations and implement into daily trading decisions and optimization applications.
Responsibilities
1. Assist with executing daily trading & scheduling decisions for next-day BESS operation in the ERCOT market. Scheduling options will include hourly commitments in the Day-Ahead Energy Market, Day-Ahead Ancillary Service market, or allocation of capacity into the Real-time market for price-based dispatch.
2. Apply in depth ISO / ERCOT market operations knowledge to develop BESS bid & offer strategies based upon proprietary applications, forecast inputs, knowledge of market design and BESS technology constraints to determine optimal market deployments of BESS on a day-to-day basis
3. Analysis of constraints and outages that impact the pricing at Jupiter Power project nodes to be incorporated into the daily dispatch decisions.
4. Provide guidance to the Real-Time desk on management of the operating assets via a daily trading summary highlighting the expected market fundamentals, specific market conditions to keep a close eye on and the DA obligations to be aware of for management of state of charge.
5. Ensure that BES assets are scheduled and managed in the most effective manner under prevailing market rules and participate in internal regulatory updates to ensure continued education around market design rules for BES in ERCOT, including implementation of RTC+B.
6. Perform daily P&L performance analysis and review all BESS market activities and outcomes in energy and ancillary service markets to support ongoing improvement in BESS performance and market positioning, and to provide information to other internal Jupiter teams (Settlements, Operations, Asset Management) to inform BESS performance assessments.
7. Analyze market data to develop Jupiter expertise regarding ISO dispatch processes, ancillary service market dynamics, and strategies to use market tools to manage risks of limited-duration exposure (e.g. the ability to manage exposure through a portfolio of multiple BES assets, and Virtual transactions)
8. Evaluate daily performance of proprietary Day-Ahead, Real Time Energy and Ancillary Service price forecasting models used to guide optimization decisions.
9. Work with Jupiter Data Science team to inform the design and implementation of internal tools to automate market assessment and advance Jupiter's proprietary storage optimization platform
10. Work with Jupiter SCADA team to identify and troubleshoot real-time communication issues between the site equipment, internal data management systems (MMS and GMS), and the ISOs.
Minimum Qualifications
Five or more years of experience in control room operations, power trading, generation scheduling or other business critical operations, with at least two years of experience in a centralized generation desk. Familiarity with energy storage technologies is an advantage. A degree(s) in finance, economics, math, electrical theory, electrical power distribution, electrical power generation, computer science or relevant field may be substituted for certain years of experience.
