CARB is charged with protecting the public from the harmful effects of air pollution and developing programs and actions to fight climate change. From requirements for clean cars and fuels, to adopting innovative solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, California has pioneered a range of effective approaches that have set the standard for effective air and climate programs both nationaly and globaly.
The Information Officer II will work as the air quality communications specialist within the Chair's Office, directly supervised by the Deputy Director of Communications. The individual will serve as a subject matter expert to the media and external audiences on all air quality issues, including mobile monitoring, prescribed fire, smoke management, and wildfires. The individual must be able to speak and write Spanish fluently and will work on communications tasks targeting Spanish-speaking audiences, including writing, translating, and conducting media interviews. With a high level of independence, the individual will serve as a liaison between CARB technical staff, the Chair's Office, the Executive Office and other relevant state and federal agencies, air districts, and local governments and councils. The incumbent will represent the Chair's Office of Communications in internal and external meetings, be the lead spokesperson on air quality issues with the news media, help develop communications and messaging strategies, and prepare public information and outreach materials. The incumbent should have demonstrable proficiency in media relations and social media. The candidate must be able to comprehend technical language and translate it for public consumption; represent the Office in a most professional and knowledgeable manner; complete the highest level of verbal and written assignments; work cooperatively with internal and external stakeholders; and, provide specialist-level support and recommendations to the Director of Communications and Deputy Director of Communications. The air quality specialist will provide creative support and advice to the Creative Services Manager, Director of Communications and Deputy Director of Communications, and help develop creative strategies and solutions to promote CARB programs and policies.

Working Conditions
This position may be eligible for hybrid in-office work and in-state telework. The amount of telework is at the agency's discretion and is based on the California Air Resources Boards' (CARB) current telework policy. While the CARB may support telework, some in-person attendance is also required.
The positions at the CARB may be eligible for telework with in-person attendance based on the operational needs of the position under Government Code 14200 for eligible applicants residing in California, subject to the candidate meeting telework eligibility criteria outlined in the CalEPA telework policy and/or future program need. Employees not residing in California are not eligible for telework. Regardless of hybrid telework eligibility, all employees may be required to report to the position's designated headquarters location at their own expense, as indicated on their duty statement.
Effective July 1, 2025, the California Department of Human Resources (CalHR) implemented the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP PLP 2025 directs that each employee shall receive a 3 percent reduction in pay in exchange for 5 hours PLP 2025 leave credits, monthly. The salary range(s) included in the job advertisement do not reflect the 3 percent reduction in pay.
