Founded in 1877, the Rochester Yacht Club (RYC) is one of the oldest and most distinguished yacht clubs in the United States. The Club offers its members exceptional sailing, racing, training, and social experiences within a vibrant waterfront community.
Position Summary
The Membership Director is a full-time, year-round leadership role responsible for developing and executing strategic marketing, branding, and communication initiatives that enhance member engagement, attract prospective members and promote club events amenities and culture. The role is pivotal in shaping the club's public image and internal communications, ensuring consistency, clarity, and creativity across all platforms.
The position reports directly to the General Manager and works closely and collaboratively with Club employees, committees and member volunteers.
Roles and Responsibilities
Member Engagement
● Develop and implement with the Membership committee strategies to support recruitment and retention of members.
● Create member surveys and feedback loops to guide communication improvements.
● Promote member achievements, milestones, and contributions through club media.
● Attend Club planning meetings to solicit input for the preparation of engagement strategies.
Marketing Strategy & Execution
● Develop and implement annual marketing plans aligned with club goals and membership growth targets.
● Design promotional campaigns for club events, regattas, dining, and seasonal programs.
● Manage digital marketing efforts including website content, email newsletters, and social media content.
● Oversees production of print material such as brochures, signage, and event flyers.
● Provide reports as needed to the Board of Directors.
Communications & Public Relations
● Serve at the Club's primary storyteller, crafting compelling narratives that reflect its heritage and community.
● Write and distribute press releases, and member updates.
● Maintain consistent brand voice across all channels.
Creative & Content Oversight
● Lead visual branding efforts including photography, video, and graphic design.
● Manage external vendors (web hosts, designers, printers, web developers, marketing companies) as needed.
● Ensure all content reflects the Club's values, tone, and aesthetic.
Member & Community Engagement
● Serve as the primary point of contact for RYC program participants, ensuring clear communication with members and the Board of Directors.
● Build partnerships with local schools, sailing programs, and community organizations.
● Organize clinics, demo days, and outreach initiatives to grow sailing participation.
● Represent RYC at community and industry events.
Administration & Budget
● Prepare and track annual budget, ensuring financial responsibility.
● Provide timely reports to the General Manager and Sthe Board of Directors
Working Conditions & Physical Demands
● Must be able to work at a computer for extended periods of time and be proficient with computer applications required for communication.
● Must be available as needed for evening meetings, evening and weekend events.
● Must be able to prioritize multiple demands maintaining clear communications.
Qualifications
● Bachelor's degree in marketing, communications, public relations or related field.
● 3-5 years of experience in marketing or communications, preferably in hospitality club, or nonprofit settings.
● Photography and videography skills desired.
● Proficiency in digital tools (e.g. Canva, Mailchimp, WordPress, Meta).
● Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a member-focused environment.
● Strategic thinker with creative flair is desirable.
● Able to build relationships within the membership community.
● Organized multitasker with enthusiasm and a passion for storytelling is ideal.
● Familiarity with sailing or waterfront culture is a plus.

Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $65, $75,000.00 per year
