Position Overview

The Art Teacher is responsible for delivering engaging, standards-aligned visual arts instruction that builds technical skill, creativity, and confidence. Key Responsibilities

Instruction & Curriculum

  • Plan and deliver rigorous, age-appropriate visual arts lessons aligned to state standards
  • Teach a range of media (e.g., drawing, painting, sculpture, mixed media, digital art as applicable)
  • Integrate art history, cultural context, and contemporary artists into instruction
  • Design projects that build skills, creativity, and perseverance

Classroom Culture & Student Support

  • Establish clear routines and expectations that support a safe, joyful studio environment
  • Build strong relationships with students and families
  • Support diverse learners, including MLLs and students with varying skill levels
  • Collaborate with deans and counselors to support student behavior and engagement

Assessment & Feedback

  • Assess student work using clear rubrics aligned to learning goals
  • Provide timely, actionable feedback to support growth
  • Maintain accurate grades, attendance, and documentation

Collaboration & Professional Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with grade-level teams and leadership
  • Participate in professional development, coaching, and school-wide events
  • Contribute to exhibitions, showcases, or school culture events
  • Communicate regularly with families about student progress

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required (Art Education or related field preferred)
  • New York State certification preferred or willingness to pursue certification
  • Experience teaching middle school students strongly preferred
  • Strong classroom management and organizational skills
  • Commitment to equity, high expectations, and continuous improvement
  • Ability to engage and motivate diverse learners

Preferred

  • Master's degree in education or related field
  • At least 2 years of middle school teaching experience
  • Experience in urban or charter school environments
  • Familiarity with data-driven instruction and literacy development
