Position Summary:
The Volunteer and Community Outreach Coordinator is a key member of the Humane Society of Greater Dayton team, responsible for recruiting, training, and retaining volunteers to support all aspects of the organization. This position also coordinates and implements community outreach initiatives, including shelter events, parades, adoption events, and educational programs. The role bridges the gap between internal staff and the community, promoting the mission of the Humane Society of Greater Dayton and ensuring successful program operations.
Essential Responsibilities:
Volunteer Recruitment and Management
- Recruit, train, and retain a robust volunteer base to support animal care, administrative tasks, events, and other organizational needs.
- Develop and implement policies and procedures for the volunteer program.
- Track volunteer hours and maintain accurate program statistics.
- Provide ongoing support, guidance, and recognition to volunteers.
- Actively promote volunteer opportunities to schools, businesses, and community groups.
Community Outreach and Event Coordination
- Plan, organize, and execute community outreach initiatives such as adoption events, educational programs, parades, and other public engagements.
- Collaborate with staff, volunteers, and external partners to ensure smooth execution of events and activities.
- Work with marketing team to create educational materials and presentations tailored to various audiences, including schools, senior centers, and local organizations.
- Represent the Humane Society of Greater Dayton in public settings, including media appearances, speaking engagements, and networking events.
- Develop and maintain relationships with local businesses, organizations, and community leaders to foster partnerships that benefit the Humane Society of Greater Dayton.
Program Development and Oversight
- Oversees the following Humane Society programs, including volunteer, offsite, and educational programs.
- Work with staff and volunteers to develop new program initiatives aligned with the organization's mission and goals.
- Supervise and evaluate the performance of the foster coordinator and event coordinators.
Administrative and Other Responsibilities
- Assist with tasks such as scheduling, data entry, ordering supplies, and other administrative duties .
- Perform or coordinate animal-related tasks , including microchipping, vaccinations, and fostering coordination.
- Handle inquiries from the public and internal stakeholders with professionalism and efficiency.
Minimum Position Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in a related field (required).
- 3–5 years of experience in volunteer management, community outreach, or event planning.
- Experience with animal welfare organizations (preferred).
- Knowledge of animal care and handling.
Skills and Competencies:
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong organizational and time-management abilities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and other relevant software.
- Ability to handle multiple priorities and shift focus as needed.
- Effective leadership and teamwork skills.

Physical and Work Environment Requirements:
- Must be able to lift and/or move up to 30 pounds (occasionally up to 50 pounds).
- Requires standing, walking, sitting, and reaching with hands and arms.
- Occasional exposure to moderate noise levels and animal-related bodily fluids.

Work Schedule
- This position requires flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, to accommodate events and volunteer activities.
- Travel within the Montgomery County area may be required.
